I was a member of "Jay's Kids" a group of medical students in early 2004-10 that Jay took under his wings to help get through the difficult years of medschool. I will always remember his advice and owe so many of the good decisions I made durint that time to his invaluable counsel. We were supported, respected and cared for with him as our adviser. His impact on this world is beyond words. My condolences to his family and appreciation to them for sharing him with us.

I met Jay over 35 years ago when I was hoping to come back to Chicago from my east coast GI fellowship. He was charming, funny, intimidating, and brilliant, all of the same time. I would see Jay, once or twice a year, and every time we talked, I was reminded how much I admired him, and enjoyed our friendship.
Jay was an intellectual force and mentor to countless healthcare professionals, some one who made a difference.... In the best way possible.
What a good man, what a wonderful legacy, he will be missed by many..... but, i along with many are better for knowing him
My deepest sympathies to all who loved Jay

Jay was my boss for over a decade. I had the privilege of having a weekly appointment with him in his office, where he demanded excellence from our trainees and more from our GI division. I got to bear his wrath when he was angry and feel his embrace when we celebrated a small victory, sometimes on the same day!
He was always giving me tips on how to lead, how to finish meetings with a plan, and how to hold people accountable. He also advocated for me before I knew how to do it myself. Jay had pictures of his former trainees in his office, and he spoke of all of his mentees like his kids and celebrated all of their successes. His office was always open with that big bowl of candy, and he made an extra effort to continue to have dinner with all of us after he retired. I'm lucky to have known him. My thoughts are with Marc and his family.

So sorry for the loss of Jay. As a medical student Jay mentored me in so many ways to be the academic physician I am today. I worked side by side with Jay in his lab in the division of GI in 1989 on his early research on the sodium hydrogen antiporter. Jay is my inspiration for the quadruple threat of research, teaching, leadership, and outstanding patient care. Jay was a great scholar, clinician, educator, leader, &
a truly wonderful person.

I will always remember Dr. Goldstein as a wonderful mentor, friend, family member and community member who would go out of his way to help support or educate anyone and everyone. He had a magnetic, charming, witty personality that warranted respect but at the core he was a warm, caring and gem of a human being. I can personally attest to the positive influence he has had on my life and on my career, always making himself available even after retirement to provide insight and guidance. I last met him in his home before I left the US to come back home to Canada. I will miss him dearly. I wish him peace and wish for strength for Marc and his family members as they cherish his legacy as an amazing teacher, leader, mentor and friend.

I knew Jay well for many years as an incredible advocate for his students, a thoughtful leader and administrator, and a kind and collaborative partner and friend. The GI community and his many, many mentees and colleagues were all enriched by his meaningful life and career. Deepest condolences to Marc and the extended family. Jay's memory and his legacy will always be a blessing.

Although I never worked with Jay, always respected him and worship our friendship. Very hard moments for his family and the Jewish world. May his memory be a blessing.

My deepest condolences to family and friends. Jay was a colleague and I was a patient of his at a critical time. I was privileged to be his patient, but honoured to know him. We only interacted a few times over the years, but it was always as if we were long lost friends. That was the way I´m sure he made everyone feel around him. All the best during this difficult time.

We sit tonight with such profound sadness. With Jay´s passing.
The heartbreak for Marc,
And terrible loss for both the families.
It´s not possible to think of Marc and Jay , without Jay.
It was just yesterday we were all dancing at their wedding.
What an honor to share in that day.
We are so sad tonight.
