Jay Smart Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Young Family Funeral Home - Kendallville on Feb. 28, 2026.
Jay Scott "Jbird" Smart, 71, of Kendallville, Indiana died Thursday, February 26, 2026, at his residence with his family at his side.

He was born February 11, 1955, in Kendallville to John and Ruth (Iddings) Smart.

On June 25, 1977, in Kendallville he married Charlene Gibson.

Jay had worked as a forklift driver and CNC operator.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter, rarely happier than when he was out in the woods or on the water with his closest friends-Larry Wineland, Don Dean, and Tom Christian. He also treasured the quieter moments, especially the countless cribbage games he shared with his best buddy Larry, a tradition that brought him joy, laughter, and friendly rivalry.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Charlene Smart of Kendallville; a son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Lacey Smart of Kendallville; six grandchildren, Madi Bodenhafer, Karter Smart, Bennett Smart, Noe (Heather) Rangel, Ema Rangel, and Eden Rangel; nine great-grandchildren, Kaison Damas, Nova Damas, Mateo Rangel, Lilliana Rangel, Katalina Rangel, Elena Rangel, Santiago Rangel, Johanna Rangel, and Anna'lycee Rangel; a brother, Kevin (Jenny) Smart of Biloxi, Mississippi; his stepmother, Bonnie Smart of Sebring, Florida; a stepbrother, Steven (Cindy) Peffley of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; a stepsister, Sherri Henley of Sebring, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shondria Nicole Rangel; his parents; and a brother, Kim Smart.

Celebration of life services will be determined at a later date.
