Jay Paul Weidner of Pullman, Washington passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at the age of 70. He was born on January 17, 1955 in Garden City, Kansas to Paul and Gertrude Weidner. He grew up in Sublette, Kansas where he graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1973. He loved hunting and working on the family wheat farm.
He graduated from Kansas State University as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. He then went on to get a Master of Science in Pathology from the University of Idaho in collaboration with Washington State University in 1986.
He practiced veterinary medicine for one year in Shawano, Wisconsin and one year in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. He came to Washington State University for his advanced degree, then worked as a pathologist, and later as manager of IT services in the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1998 he received an individual staff recognition award from WSU. Jay was passionate about his work and enjoyed the professional community and friendships he developed throughout his career. In 2011, he was forced to take a disability retirement.
Jay married Janice Wilson on July 22, 1989 on Lake Thomas near Colville, WA and they were married for 35 years. In the early years of their marriage Jay was an avid fly fisherman and with Janice went on many camping and fishing trips.
With the arrival of their children, Paul in 1996 and Emily in 1999, his hobbies expanded to include coaching little league baseball, driving to soccer games, watching dance recitals and horse-back riding lessons. Those who knew Jay know how much he loved his children and how dedicated he was to his family. He instilled in them a love of learning and supported them as they explored their interests.
Jay loved construction and researching the latest building technologies. He did an extensive remodel on the family home in Pullman, WA and started (sometimes finished) various projects around the property over the years. Jay enjoyed all his time spent laughing, working and learning with friends and family on these projects.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Gertrude Weidner; He is survived by his wife, Janice; son, Paul and partner Julia Ide of Spokane, WA; daughter, Emily of Pullman, WA; sisters, Fawn Rizzo of Livingston, NJ, and Kim (Dave) Thornburrow of (Camdenton MO, and San Marcos, TX); brothers, Steve (Janet) of Sublette and Ken (Meg) of Copland, KS, and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at the Haskell County Museum.
