Jay Werts, 68, formerly of Tyndall, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Sr. James Care Center in Yankton.
Burial will be 3:30 p.m., today, Monday, February 23, 2026 at Bon Homme Cemetery.
Jay Lynn Werts was born May 13, 1957 to Robert and Lois Werts in Van Wert, Ohio. His sister Rebecca was born 6 years later. Jay attended Van Wert Franklin High School, graduating in 1976.
He moved to Springfield, SD July 4, 1980. Jay worked at The Library restaurant and McDonald’s until going to work at the Human Services Center, September 1980. During this time he also worked part-time at S Food where he met the love of his life, Patricia Nordyke. Their first date was to a haunted house October 17, 1981. They were married a year later, October 16, 1982. Out of this beautiful marriage came a son, Jeffrey Lynn Werts, born January 2, 1992. Jeffrey was named the first New Year’s Baby that year.
Jay worked for the state for 32 years. He retired October 8, 2013 when his son joined the Navy and was stationed in Japan. Jay loved to travel and go fishing but most of he loved to spend time with his family.
