Benson, NC: Mrs. Jean Wallace Byrd, age 86, of Raleigh Road passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Funeral Services will be held-2:00 PM Monday, March 16, 2026 at Rose and Graham Funeral Chapel in Four Oaks. Officiating will be Rev. Billy Nowell. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Grove Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Byrd was born on September 3, 1939 in Johnston County to the late Arthur and Virginia Dunn Wallace. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred T. Byrd; son, Chris Byrd; and sisters, Peggy Smith, Barbara Byrd, and Judy Blackman. Prior to retirement, she had a long career at Johnston County Social Services. Mrs. Byrd was a faithful Christian and member of St. Mary’s Grove Original Freewill Baptist Church in Benson where she served her church as long as she was able. She loved gardening and working in her yards as well as walking with her friends. She loved her family and was proudly called “Nana” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her son, Mike Byrd and wife, Kim; grandchildren, Christie Mitchell and husband, Jeffery, Dusty Byrd and wife, Keri, Jennifer Capps and husband, Adam; Jordan Byrd and wife, Deanna, and Brandon Byrd; 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM prior to the service at Rose and Graham Funeral Home in Four Oaks.
The family would like to thank the loving caregivers that loved and cared for Mrs. Byrd over the years, Kay Jones, Khadijah Devone, and Deborah Mozingo.
