Jean Cooper Obituary

Jean Alice Chapman Cooper, 92, of Tarentum, passed away peacefully Monday, May 8, 2023, in Duluth, Ga. Jean Alice Chapman Cooper was born Sept. 9, 1930, in Tarentum, to Dwight L. Chapman and Lucile Cosby Chapman. She attended Har-Brack High School, Natrona Heights, and Westminster College, New Wilmington, before her marriage to David Blake Cooper on March 26, 1951. Jean was a loving mother to three children, David Cosby Cooper, Milford Blake Cooper and Isobel Jolie Cooper and then re-entered the work force in 1977 to join her husband in their family business of Cooper Music Inc., Atlanta, Ga. She also enjoyed golf and playing bridge and in her later years managed to find time for all three of these things. She enjoyed spending her summers in Chautauqua, N.Y., which she had done her whole life and had many friends and enjoyed many activities there. She was on the board of directors for the Chautauqua Golf Course for a brief period before her health would not allow her to continue playing golf. Jean also completed the course at the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (CLSC). She will be sorely missed. Jean Alice Chapman Cooper is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 65 years, David Blake Cooper; her sister, Dorothy Chapman Songer Flanagan; and her brother, Dwight Chapman. Jean is survived by her sons, David C. Cooper and spouse, Zhanna M., and Blake Cooper and spouse, Donna; and daughter, Isobel Jolie Cooper. Also surviving are grandchildren, Ian Blake Cooper and spouse, Robyn, Laura Jean Cooper and David Vladimir Cooper; as well as five great-grandchildren. The family of Jean Cooper wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Inhabit Hospice and their dear and loving in home caregivers, Tricia Rohde, Latesha Hines and Caroline Nelson and her daughter, Caryna, and Michelle Buford whose efforts enabled us to be able to keep mom at home until the end. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2023, Chautauqua, N.Y., location to be determined, with the Rev. Mary Lee Talbot officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Chautauqua Foundation at giving.chq.org. online condolences may be expressed at www.crowellbrothers.com. Arrangements are entrusted to CROWELL BROTHERS FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATORY, 5051 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Peachtree Corners, GA 30092, 770-448-5757.

R. Cameron Malcolm IV

May 16, 2023

My name is Rev. Robert Cameron Malcolm IV from Natrona Heights. I am the great nephew of George D. Stuart who was Dwight Chapman's best friend. I remember Mr. Chapman and his pharmacy in Tarentum. My uncle and aunt, Edna Tench Stuart, enjoyed a close relationship with Dwight and Lucile. While I never met Jean, my sympathy is extended to the family remembering a close connection long ago. Peace be with you!

Aunt Jean was a mainstay of my childhood. Spending holidays with the Chapman Grandparents or summers at Chautauqua, she was always there. Etched in my mind is the very plaintive cry she and my mother, her sister Dorothy, would cry in unison when trying to reason with their very headstrong mother. "M O T H E R!!!!" I guess you had to be there. RIP
