Pembroke- Mrs. Jean Hope Johnson, age 96, passed away Monday, August 4, 2025. Mrs. Johnson was born in Denmark, SC to the late John Hardwick Hope and Ester Elizabeth Cone Hope. In her youth, Mrs. Johnson attended Bethel Park Methodist Church in Denmark, SC. This is where she was baptized and sang in the choir. In 1946, Mrs. Johnson graduated from Denmark High School and was voted by her peers as “Best Citizen of the Senior Class”. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.

Mrs. Johnson grew up during the Great Depression and times were very hard for her and her family. She improved her circumstances by serving as a school teacher, later operated a child’s day care and was a case worker for the Division of Family and Children Services. She was a well educated, hardworking and generous lady. Mrs. Jean was well liked by everyone that crossed her path in life. Her sons describe her as a praying mother; faithful and strong.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Donald Radford Johnson; one brother, John “Brother” Hope and one granddaughter, Anna Johnson.

Survivors include her four sons and two daughters-in-law, John Radford Johnson, Sr. of Pembroke, David Hope Johnson of Swainsboro, Greg Lanier Johnson and Shiela Johnson of Pembroke and Donald Andrew Johnson and Alesha Johnson of Jenkinsburg, GA; one brother, Marion Cone Hope of Denmark, SC; grandchildren, Beth Hilliard, John R.
