Jean C Medina Obituary
Emma Jean Costner was born November 9, 1934 in Lincolnton, North Carolina. She did not like the name Emma and went strictly by Jean Costner. After graduating high school she attended Presbyterian School of Nursing in North Carolina starting in 1951. Back in those days, the nursing students were not allowed to be married. In 1953, she was set up on a blind date by her good friend Doris and her boyfriend Harry with his best friend, Andy Sais who was in the Air Force. They fell in love and got married by eloping to Maryland on August 13, 1954. She had to keep their marriage secret so she wouldn't get kicked out of nursing school. She graduated in 1955 from nursing school and moved to California with her husband.
She started working at Beverly Hospital in Montebello CA in 1955 as an RN. She worked at Beverly Hospital for 45 years and retired in 2000. The last 23 years she was the head of the Cardiac Therapy Department.
In 1957 she had her first son Eric and in 1959 she had her second son Mark. She divorced from her first husband in 1973. She went on a trip to Hawaii with her girlfriend in the summer of 1979 and met her future husband, Gilbert Medina. They were married on June 14, 1980 and were married for 34 years before his passing in 2014.
She is survived by her two sons, Eric and Mark, along with their wives Kathleen and Kim. Also, her grandchildren, Christopher, Marlee, Taylor and Travis. She had 3 great grandchildren, Keylee, Miles and River. From Gilbert's side of the family, she is survived by three of Gil's children, Gilbert(Rick), Cynthia and Ruby, along with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
