Jean was born in Brussels, Belgium, into a family of prominent patissiers, spending his time after school working in the basement with his father making such delicacies as the famous chocolate Easter eggs. But from the beginning the sea beckoned. His mother, knowing she wouldn't see him often, nonetheless did her best to make this happen. He attended the Ecole Superior de Navigation d'Anvers (Antwerp) and spent a year on the training ship Mercator traveling the world. This historic vessel may still be visited in the marina of Ostend. Continuing his career in the Belgian merchant marine, he rose in rank rapidly and became captain at the age of thirty two. Studying while at sea, he was able to earn a degree in maritime law at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles. After about twenty years at sea he became a port captain, flying to ports around the world to solve problems.
After settling in Portland, Jean joined hiking groups and then began tai chi. For twenty five years he practiced in Grant Park and formed close bonds with the members of the group. He also loved classical music and he and Marion attended Portland Baroque concerts for thirty years. They traveled yearly to visit his family in Belgium and Marion's family in France.
Jean is survived by his wife Marion and his family in Belgium: daughter Michele (Eric), grandchildren Celine (Romain), Adrien, and Paul, and great grand-daughter Olivia; his sister Jacqueline, godson Vincent and niece Natalie. His beloved daughter Pascale died in 2006.
