Nellie Jean Schunmann, age 81, of Cheshire, passed peacefully on January 27, 2026 at Midstate Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. For 53 years, she was the devoted wife of the late Frederick C. Schunmann Jr. who predeceased her in 2017. Jean was born in Port Elgin, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of the late Wilfred and Helen Scott Dale.
A woman of deep faith, Jean was actively involved in her church during her years in Wallingford and Florida, and she cherished the fellowship and friendships she shared with her congregation.
Jean enjoyed country music, dancing, working in the yard, and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Jean loved caring for her home and decorating for every holiday. But her VERY favorite pastime was taking trips to the casino, where she loved playing the slot machines. She had incredibly good luck.
Family was everything to Jean and remained her greatest joy throughout her life. She is survived by her children, Christine (Ryne) Dorsey and Christian (Victoria) Schunmann, all of Wallingford, and her grandchildren Ian and Noah Dorsey and Lorelei and Wolfgang Schunmann, who loved their Nanny. Jean is also survived by her siblings Florence Gustafson, Agnes Neal, and William (Janet) Dale, her sister-in-law Barbara Miller, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Jean was predeceased by two infant children, two sisters, Shirley Norrman and Mary Todd, and two brothers, Russell and Ralph Dale.
The family wishes to thank her caregivers for their compassionate care during her illness, especially Caroline, Esmie, and Dineo - who proved to be a true blessing and became a part of the family.
Jean's family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford on Sunday, February 15th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will commence at the funeral home at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Fred & Jean Schunmann Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Paul's Methodist Church, 800 SE 41st Avenue, Ocala, FL 34471.
