Jean Self

November 7, 1941 – July 25, 2025

Ashtabula, Ohio

Jean Self passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, in her hometown of Ashtabula, Ohio. She was 83 years old.

Jean was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, godmother, and friend. She was the proud mother of Shawnda Delise and the late Dean Self, and the cherished grandmother of Desiree Self and Angie Vera. She shared a close bond with her goddaughter and niece, Barb Skytta, who spent many special moments by her side. Jean was a loving sister to Eugene, Rose, Fred, and Fredricka Mongenel, and is now reunited in peace with her beloved son Dean, as well as her late brothers Tony and Steve Mongenel.

To her family, she was known as "Nana" - a woman who carried a childlike, playful energy paired with a bright and beautiful heart. She taught by example what it meant to love unconditionally - regardless of someone's race, religious beliefs, or who they loved. Her door was always open, even to those many would turn away - including the Mormons, who always found a welcome face at Jean's home.

She had a wonderful sense of humor and charm and knew how to use it - irony and laughter were second nature to her. But beneath the laughter was a woman of deep spiritual awareness, in tune with far more than the physical world. Her faith was quiet but profound, guiding her through life with a grace that touched everyone around her.

Jean loved her sweet cat Malichi, she loved to read and had a thirst for knowledge and wisdom, which she generously passed down to her children and grandchildren. The spirit of our grandmother is vast and bright - warm, ancient, wise, and loving. We've shared so many beautiful memories with her, and for that we are forever grateful.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at Czup Funeral Home, 1329 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula; calling hours will be from 11:00-12:30 with funeral services starting at 12:30.

Thank you, Nana, for your time with us. Thank you for the love you gave so freely. Thank you for watching over us now.
