She was born on February 17, 1931 to Clark and Lillie Hargrove in Crosbyton, Texas. Jean was one of twelve children, all of whom preceded her in death. On May 3, 1947 she married Lonnie Stokes. They moved to the Cotton Center Community in 1955 and lived in the Cotton Center and Hale Center area until 2019. Lonnie preceded her in death in 2014. Jean was a member of the Cotton Center First Baptist Church and later the Hale Center First Baptist Church. She was a devout Christian woman. Whenever she was in the hospital or rehab she always asked for her Bible, not just any Bible, but the one she had made notations in and underlined in. Jean was a devoted Bible reader and her morning routine included her Bible reading and coffee. Jean worked at various jobs including the family farm and being a sergeant mother (as she called herself). She was Supervisor of the Cafeteria at C.C. ISD for many years, then Post Master at C.C. Post office for over twenty years.
Those left to cherish her memories are one daughter, Jeannie Stephens and husband Billy and one son, Joe Stokes and wife Janis. Her grandchildren included Kalyn Bourland and husband Matthew, Marcy Kurklin and husband Kent, Ben Stokes and wife Erin, Brad Stokes and fiancé Becca Munez. Great grandchildren include Jordan Rivera, Tucker Hendrix and Petra, Logan Kurklin, Kole Kurklin and fiancé Hannah Ayers. Great great grandchildren are Jessica, Jayleigh and Josiah. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
