Jeanne Knoerle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2013.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Former St. Mary-of-the-Woods College president Sister Jeanne Knoerle (NUR'-lee) has died at age 85.

Knoerle led the Catholic liberal arts school for women near Terre Haute from 1968 to 1983 and continued as its co-chancellor. The college says she died Monday at the community of nuns.

School officials say Knoerle launched its external degree program in 1973 as a way to educate women who could not attend college in a traditional way. The school now about 1,000 women and men enrolled in its distance-learning classes and about 300 students in its women-only undergraduate campus programs.

Current school President Dottie King tells the Tribune-Star (http://bit.ly/108vAyL ) that Knoerle's work was groundbreaking and that she was an energetic and positive leader.

The world was a better place with Sister Jeanne in it. She was an inspiration to me and many other Hoosier women and it was a pleasure to work with her on the Governor's Commission on the Staus of Women and with Partners of the Americas. She was an outstanding writer and speaker and a tribute to her religious community. Farewell.

Dear Knoerle family, Jeanne will be dearly missed. Please know that our God has a book of remembrance as Malachi 3:16 brings out. And all those in this book will be brought back to life again.
