Jeffrey Barnes

Jeffrey Barnes, 69, of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away on January 30, 2026. He was affectionately known by his friends as "JB". Jeff was raised in Chesapeake by the late Willie Edward Barnes and Doris Stephens Barnes. He spent most of his life in the place he proudly called home.

Jeff worked as a dedicated longshoreman with the International Longshoremen's Association for over 45 years, where his strong work ethic and reliability reflected the kind of man he was - hardworking, observant, and deeply committed to providing for his family. He believed in showing up, doing the job right, and taking care of the people he loved.

To know Jeff was to know laughter, stories, and music. He had an outgoing spirit and a natural gift for connecting with people. He loved being outdoors - whether he was fishing, soaking up fresh air, or simply enjoying the day. One of his favorite pastimes was playing pool, where he was just as likely to be cracking jokes as lining up the perfect shot. He also had a passion for collecting coins, appreciating the history and stories behind each piece.

Music was a special part of Jeff's life. He was musically gifted and loved playing the guitar and piano, but most of all, he loved to sing - filling rooms and hearts with sound in a way only he could. Whether he was joking, telling stories, or playing a tune, he brought warmth wherever he went. Above all, Jeff was a loving and caring family man.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Barnes; his children, Gerald Johnson, Jessica Barnes, and Jasmine Barnes; his daughter-in-law, Maegan Johnson; his grandchildren, Sydney Johnson, Caira Johnson, and Alana Johnson; his godson, Isaiah Long; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Jeff is predeceased by his sister Carol Barnes-Hightower, and his other siblings are Marietta B. Cowart, Willie Donell Barnes, Adreon Carlet Barnes, and Emily D. Barnes. He leaves behind a family who will forever carry his humor, his music, and the love he gave so freely.

Jeff will be remembered for his big heart, his jokes, his stories, and the way he made ordinary moments feel special. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will live on in the lives of those who loved him.
