Richard Barnes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Buxton & Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and Crematory on Feb. 28, 2026.
Richard Ellsworth Barnes, Jr., 68, of Okeechobee, passed away peacefully at his home on February 25, 2026.

Richard was born on September 25, 1957 in Pennsylvania and was raised in Palmyra. He was the son of the late Rose Marie (Troutman) Barnes and Richard Ellsworth Barnes, Sr. Richard built a life defined by dedication, hard work, family, and community.

He graduated from Palm Beach State College with a degree in Land Surveying and Mapping and went on to spend 48 years working as a Professional Land Surveyor and Mapper in both the public and private sectors. His career reflected his strong work ethic and commitment to his profession, including active involvement in the Florida Survey and Mapping Society.

Above all else, Richard loved his family. He found great joy in raising his three children; and later cheering on and supporting his grandchildren at their activities and sporting events. In his free time, Richard enjoyed cruising in his Corvette, sport shooting, camping, fishing, and tending to his homestead-gardening, landscaping, and raising livestock. He was also known among friends and family for making his infamous smoked fish dip. Richard was a devoted fan of both the Florida Gators and the Miami Dolphins, proudly holding Dolphins season tickets for 28 years.

Richard was deeply involved in his community. Over the years, he volunteered as a coach for the Okeechobee Citizens Recreational Association, was a member of the Okeechobee High School Booster Club, served as a prior president and member of the Okeechobee Youth Livestock Show Committee and a Livestock Committee Chairman for the South Florida Fair. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Roxanne K Barnes; his children, Richard Ellsworth Barnes, III (Megan), Rebecca Rose Marsocci (Chase), and Randi K Albritton (Blaine); and his cherished grandchildren, Landen Marsocci, Hoyt Marsocci, Zane Barnes, and a baby Albritton on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Wendy Feri (Danny). As well as lifelong friends, Dennis Notman and Daniel "Boone" Wright.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Rose Marie Barnes and Richard Ellsworth Barnes, Sr.; and his brother, Rodney Scott Barnes.

Richard will be remembered for his devotion to family, his generous spirit, and the pride he took in his community and the life he built.

The family wishes to celebrate Richard's wonderful life with friends and family at the Barnes family home on March 7, 2026 at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brahman Athletic Association in memory of Rick Barnes.
