OBITUARY
Jeffrey W. Van Benschoten was born on December 6, 1948, in Poughkeepsie, New York. A lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, Jeff passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Jeff was the 12th generation of Van Benschotens born in Poughkeepsie. He graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1967 and earned an associate degree from Dutchess Community College in 1969. Jeff dedicated over 34 years to IBM, where he was instrumental in teaching students computer programming during the industry's formative years. On May 24, 1970, Jeff married Diane Crouse at St. Martin de Porres Church. They were married for over 54 years. Together, they raised three children: Jared (BethAnne), Jeffrey "Jay" (Dana), and Sarah. Jeff was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Isabelle, Helena, Autumn, Rachael, and Colin. One of nine siblings, Jeff is survived by Sharon, Wallace (Mary), Larry, Cherrie, Donna, and Wayne, as well as his brother-in-law, Daniel Crouse (Judy), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Wallace E. Van Benschoten and Charmaine Taylor Van Benschoten, and his siblings, Susan Van Benschoten and Billy Van Benschoten. In his younger years, Jeff found joy in stock car racing at Arlington Speedway with his father, sparking a lifelong passion for racing that extended to BMX with his sons. He was a dedicated coach for CYO basketball and LaGrange Little League baseball and softball, always supporting his children's and grandchildren's athletic pursuits. Jeff shared a special bond with his daughter, Sarah, enjoying New Jersey Devils hockey games, concerts, comedy shows, and movies together. Jeff was known for his humor, captivating stories, and love of Westerns, Jeff left an indelible mark on those who knew him. The family would like to thank Jeff's longtime friend, Mark Tomizon of Florida, for his thoughtful gifts of Western movies and a DVD player during his hospice stay. Special appreciation is also extended to the compassionate team who cared for Jeff in his final months, including Hospice Angel Nurses Lawrence, Michael, Chris, Barb, and Jaime; social worker Michelle; appointment coordinator Cecilia; and Freddy from Hopewell Pharmacy. Following Jeff's wishes, there will be no visitation or formal services. However, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Jeff was my ex brother-in-law and I remember him well. He always was cheerful and positive, always smiling. I remember also what a great dad he was. He will be missed by all who were fortunate to know him.

I grew up across the street from the Van Benschoten family. My brother, John and I are a few years older than Jared, Jay and Sarah.
I'm very sorry to hear of Mr Van's passing. He was an awesome "neighborhood father" to the kids in the neighborhood. If he was out playing baseball, football or basketball with his kids, we were welcome to join in. We spent many nights playing catch, pickle or 500 in the street. He taught me to throw a curve ball and a screwball, or screwgy as he called it, but was sure to teach us how to warm up first and not throw too many with our young arms.
Mr. Van was a central figure in my early years and I think of him and his family often.
May his family cherish the fond memories of him, as I do. Rest in peace, Mr. Van.

I remember Jeff i was a very young kid going to the VanBensoton house and he was the big teenager. I kinda looked up to him because he had a go kart under the front porch so in my eyes that made him super cool as years went on I still think of him as the big teenager in the house

My condolences to Jeff's family and friends. I remember Jeff from IBM and he was a very friendly person. We also played basketball at the IBM Country Club and oftentimes joked and chatted. May Jeff now Rest in peace.

I'll never watch a Western without thinking of him. Jeff was a sweet guy who shared his jokes, his photos, his favorite movies. He is dearly missed.
