Jeffrey Carlyle Cameron, associate professor of biochemistry and fellow in the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) at CU-Boulder and a pioneer in the science and application of cyanobacteria, died on September 25 in Boulder County, Colorado. He was 43.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Jennifer Michelle Cameron and his four children, Noelle Rose (11), Jasper Carlyle (9), Evette Blue (8), and Margot Love (8). He is also survived by his parents, Douglas Carlyle Cameron and Sally Jo Cameron, his siblings, Derek Raymond Cameron, Sarah Justine Cameron, and Michael Andrew Cameron, his paternal grandparents, Carlyle and Jean Cameron, and his maternal grandmother, Inga Elizabeth Clark.
Jeff Cameron was born on February 16, 1981 in La Grange, IL. He graduated from Wayzata High School in Minnesota. He studied plant science at Montana State University and Washington University in St. Louis, where he obtained a Ph.D.
Jeff was a devoted husband and father. He and Jenn shared a love for art, craft, travel, and nature. A favorite activity was mushroom hunting. A family goal was to visit all the National Parks. Jeff loved cooking and made exquisite dinners for his family every night and served breakfast in bed to the family on their birthdays. He was a master baker and bread maker. He had a garden and grew many of his family's vegetables.
Jeff's research interests included photosynthesis, carbon-fixation, sub-cellular organization of bacterial metabolism, bioimaging, and lichen. Jeff was a cofounder of Prometheus Materials, a startup company focused on sustainable building materials such as bio-bricks and low-carbon cement.
In addition to science, Jeff had a vast range of other interests and skills, including jewelry and metal working, photography, stained glass, hiking, and mountain biking. He was teaching himself the piano and ukulele. Jeff loved coffee and sometimes roasted his own beans. His standard wardrobe was a coffee-shop T-shirt.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I worked with Dr. Cameron on pursuing foundation funding at CU. The creativity of his ideas was so impressive - the warmth and friendliness he brought to his every day work interactions even more so. He was a special human and I know he will be deeply missed by many.
