Hugh Scott Cameron Jr.
May 19, 1936 – March 6, 2026
Hugh Scott Cameron Jr., known to all who loved him as "Scott" or "Scotty" passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, in
Lago Vista, Texas, at the age of 89. Born on May 19, 1936, in
Brooklyn, New York, to Hugh Scott Cameron Sr. and Laura June Cameron. Scott lived a life defined by intellectual curiosity, steadfast service, and an unshakeable zest for life.
Scott spent his early years in New York before his family relocated to Texas when he was twelve. He graduated from Lamar High School in Houston and went on to Texas Tech University where he graduated in 1962 with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Upon graduation, Scott accepted a position with DuPont, where he supervised the construction of petrochemical plants across Texas and Louisiana. His career took him through several oil companies before he found his professional home at Brown & Root in Houston, where he served as Engineering Manager in the Power Plant Engineering Department. Among his most significant achievements was his role as lead structural engineer for the South Texas Nuclear Plant at Matagorda Bay. Scott retired from Brown & Root in 1988, but his passion for engineering endured. He transitioned into forensic engineering, working both independently and with Rimkus Consulting, traveling to regions devastated by hurricanes and major storms to assess foundation failures and moisture damage. His career as a Civil and Structural Engineer spanned more than fifty-five distinguished years.
In December 1983, Scott met the love of his life, Catherine "Kitty" Cameron. After a brief courtship, they were married in March of 1984. In 1991, a friend's invitation to visit Lake Travis introduced Scott and Kitty to a place that would forever change their lives. They purchased a lake house in Lago Vista in 1992, and by 1996 had made it their permanent home. Together, they embraced the joys of lake living - hosting gatherings, building lasting friendships, and creating a lifetime of memories aboard their pontoon boat. Scott's warmth and charm continued to grace gatherings, even after the loss of his dear Kitty.
Golf became one of Scott's great passions in his Lago Vista years. He competed in numerous tournaments and claimed the Lago Vista Men's Golf Association Championship in 2012 - a title he wore with great pride. In later years he could be found on the course nearly every day, still competitive, still smiling. Scott also devoted considerable energy to tracing his ancestry, eventually connecting his roots to the Cameron Clan of Scotland. In 2018, he traveled to Scotland with Sally and Cathy, where they were graciously received at Cameron Castle by Donald Cameron, the clan's chief and 27th Lochiel.
Scott's commitment to community service was equally remarkable. He served on the City of Lago Vista Building and Standards Commission, including several years as Chairperson. In May of 2023, he was awarded with a plaque in recognition of his hard work and support and service to the City of Lago Vista, as part of the Building and Standards Commission. He was a devoted member of the Lago Vista Men's Club Mentoring for Boys and a faithful participant in the Friends of the Library, where he served as treasurer for many years. He spent five years in leadership position of Lakeside Christion Fellowship (first as Treasurer, Then as Moderator). Scott was on the original Charter commission as well. His deepest organizational loyalty belonged to the Lago Vista Lions Club, where he served as secretary and director at various times. In 2003, he was honored with the Lion of the Year Award, given to the member who has made the greatest impact in advancing the objectives of Lionism. In 2019, he received the Melvin Jones Award - the highest recognition bestowed by Lions International - a testament to a lifetime of selfless service.
Scott is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine "Kitty" Cameron, and his parents, Hugh Scott Cameron Sr. and Laura June Cameron.
He is survived by his son Stephen Cameron and his wife Angela and daughter Sally Cameron Rochte, and Kitty's daughters Cathy Braun, and Joni Gamble and her husband Alan; his sister, Elaine Gary; his dear friend, Shiela Horne; grandchildren Katrina Cameron, Hope Cameron, Amanda Cameron, Amber Cameron, Alexa Rochte, Abrianna Rochte, Sandy Nierva, Christopher Gamble, Tori Jenkins, Kirby Jenkins, Janelle Enos, Brandon Enos; great-grandchildren Luna Edwards, Sora Lagneaux, Cameron Thor, and Alice Nierva; and a cherished multitude of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 21 from 1:00-2:00pm with A Celebration of Life starting at 2:00 p.m. at Beck Funeral Home, 1700 East Whitestone Blvd., Cedar Park, Texas.
He showed up for the party, won the golf tournament, and had a witty comment ready for every occasion.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Lago Vista Lions Club and/or the Lago Vista Friends of the Library in Scott's memory.
