Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home - Baton RougeWith profound sadness, we share the news of the passing of Jeffrey "Neil" Gibbs, 42, who left us on Monday, November 3, 2025, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on May 21, 1983, in Springfield, Illinois, Neil was a beacon of intelligence and discipline from his earliest days. His numerous talents paved the way for a life full of achievements. Growing up in Palmyra, Illinois, he left his mark at Northwestern High School, participating in FFA., excelling in baseball and football, and becoming a local legend as a sharpshooter in basketball - having spent countless hours honing his skills off the court. After high school, Neil proudly joined the United States Army National Guard, serving an 18-month tour overseas during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Kuwait and Iraq. Upon returning, he was deployed to Louisiana to assist with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
Transitioning from his military service, Neil focused his dedication and talent on building a small business in the tree industry, becoming a skilled certified arborist and founding Diversified Tree Co., a venture he nurtured from the ground up. His unwavering work ethic and integrity turned his business into a trusted name within the Baton Rouge area and neighboring communities. Outside of his professional life, Neil cherished time spent with family, friends, and his beloved dogs. He had a genuine appreciation for good food, cultivating his trees, staying active, tinkering with mechanics, and indulging in his passion for art.
Neil had a special way of brightening up any gathering with his infectious smile and laughter. Even during the most challenging times, he faced life with a remarkable spirit of courage, thoughtfulness, and purpose.
He is survived by a loving family, including his parents, Jeff Gibbs of Modesto, IL, and Brenda Gibbs of Palmyra, IL, his two brothers, Jason Gibbs and wife Courtney of Hettick, IL, and Jared Gibbs of Palmyra, IL, and his sister, Jessica Jean Gibbs of Glendale, AZ. Neil is also survived by his grandparents Larry and Bonnie Waters of Palmyra, IL, Donald Gibbs of Modesto, IL, and Carol Woods of Woodward, OK; along with many nieces and nephews; and his four Siberian Huskies—Dakota, Samantha, Jasper, and Sara.
Neil's love, wisdom, and joy will forever be in the hearts of those who knew him.
A Celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Gilead Baptist Church, 679 Boy Scout Road in Hettick, Illinois. A Memorial Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Memorials in honor of Neil may be made to Gilead Baptist Church, P.O. Box 27, Hettick, IL 62649.
