Jeffrey Phillip Smith, 62, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, in a local care center.

Mr. Smith was born in San Bernardino, California, and had lived in the Jacksonville area since 2022. He proudly served his country in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division, Infantry, and participated in the invasion of Grenada, known as Operation Urgent Fury. His military service was a source of honor and pride throughout his life.

Jeffrey was a man devoted to God, Country and Family. His faith remained an important foundation in his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Betty Smith; and four brothers, Tuffer Logemann, Bob Kiemel, Gary Kiemel, and Mike Kiemel.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kitty Jo Rich; five children, Jessica Mermis, Jennifer Saenger, Brittany Smith (Shawn), Mandy Gunderson (Jeff), and Dusty Sparks; his sister, Tricia Reuther (Trevis); his brother, Patrick Smith (Darla); and his beloved dog, Bragg. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren, Tyler Billings, McKenzie Billings (Caleb), Dane Shea, KaeLeighAnn Bergman, Lillee Saenger, Jordan Saenger, Alex Kissell,Jayda Gunderson, Dominick Childress (Whitney), Elyjah Fletcher (Trinity), and Malik Sparks; and four great-grandchildren, Bradley Barke, Ayla Moon Kissel, Emery Rose Fletcher, and Kamea Childress, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will cherish his memory.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 6, 2026, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 601 Airport Center Drive East, with Father Christopher Liguori officiating. Burial will follow at 12:30 PM at Jacksonville National Cemetery (Lane 1) with full Military Honors.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the DAV: Disabled American Veterans or a charity of your choice in Jeff's memory.
