Teachers matter. They may forget day to day when a kid says this is stupid. Or your class is so boring or they try to sleep, drawing on themselves, stealing shoes, spurting hand sanitizer (add more)
But teachers matter. I found out today that my high school theater teacher passed away. And instantly I was flooded with the memories. Do I think if them everyday, no. But it shaped me to be the person that I am. I was a lonely, awkward freshman who had to take theater to graduate. I hated being in front of people and worked backstage most of the time. But I loved the stage. Ms. Mitchell saw that. I was the costume director for the first play You Can't Take It With You. And when one of the performers backed out at the last minute, she asked me to step in. You know everyone's lines Shannon and you can do it. It was a small part but I did it and every play and musical after that too. I became more confident and less shy and took every theater class Warsaw offered. Her push and support helped to shape my future.
And as I stand in front if my own class and think why, it's because I too want to make a difference just like Ms. Mitchell.
