Jeremiah Joseph Dolan passed away peacefully on November 22, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on August 11, 1946, in Worcester, Massachusetts, Jeremiah was the cherished son of Jeremiah and Mary (Keough) Dolan.
Jeremiah grew up in Marlborough, MA and was a graduate of St. John's High School in Shrewsbury, MA. He went on to discover his passion for philosophy and logical reasoning at Boston College, where he was a member of the Class of 1968. He continued his education at the New School for Social Research in New York City, where he earned his PhD and had the unique privilege to study with, among others, Aron Gurwitsch, Hans Jonas, and Hannah Arendt. While in New York, he also began his teaching career at Baruch College. In 1980, he moved to Nashua, New Hampshire to start a professorship at Rivier College, where he would go on to teach philosophy for 32 years.
Jeremiah complemented his academic pursuits with a deep commitment to a well-rounded life. He was an avid reader, bread baker, hiker, and loved classical music. He actively contributed to his community, volunteering his time and expertise to many organizations including the New Hampshire Humanities Council and New Hampshire Public Radio. He was a member of the American Philosophical Association and served for many years on the Boards of both Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music and the Presentation of Mary Academy. In all of his endeavors, he brought a deep sense of joy, compassion, and curiosity for the people and world around him. He was universally appreciated as a wonderful conversationalist and a uniquely good listener.
Jeremiah is predeceased by his parents, Mary and Jeremiah Dolan. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Merina Dolan, their son, Jonathan Dolan and his wife Meryl, his granddaughters Hannah and Sophie, his sister Maryellen Dolan, and sister-in-law Ellen, and her husband John Mavretic.

I was blessed to have Dr. Dolan for Logic the first semester of my freshman year at Rivier College in 1982. I will always remember his signature outfit -- a tweed or corduroy blazer with patches on the elbows. I remember thinking, "He even looks like a philosophy professor!"

It was because of him that I ended up taking 4 other philosophy classes. I think I had him for all of them! I worked as a tutor in the learning center and loved tutoring freshman logic students. The added joy was that Dr. Dolan and I would have meetings every couple of weeks to discuss the progress of the students. During those times we discussed other topics and he became a mentor.

I looked forward to our meetings because I knew, no matter how much stress I was feeling or how poorly my day was going, I would leave his office feeling like a million bucks.

Dr. Dolan was a wonderful human being and I know he is face to face with Jesus now.

Thank you Merina and Johnathan for sharing your wonderful husband and father with all of us.

Jerry was a wonderful friend who I was privileged to know for twenty years. One of the most memorable times of my life was co-teaching an honors course with him. What a treat to share a classroom with this kind and gifted teacher. Most significantly, when I was experiencing some very challenging times in my academic career, Jerry was there to provide incredible support in truly challenging times. Jerry was one of a kind, and I will miss him greatly. Bill Totherow
