Jerl Dene Carter "Babe", age 84, of Sebewaing, passed away Wednesday morning at Medilodge in Cass City. Jerl was born in Fairdale, West Virginia, on February 4, 1941, to Herbert, Sr. and Opal (Beckelhammer) Carter. He married Janet Winter on April 25, 1965. She preceded him in death July 2008. Jerl worked a few years in Chicago on a pipeline before moving to the Sebewaing area. He then worked for and retired from Sebewaing Industries. Jerl enjoyed tinkering in his garage where neighbors would come over and enjoy a coffee. He also liked fishing, doing yardwork, gardening, deer hunting, watching the Detroit Lions and being with his grandchildren. Jerl is survived by his son, Ward Carter of Sebewaing; daughter, Nancy (Kim) VanNortwick of Ludington; grandchildren: Sierra Manial, Spencer, Lance, Jordyn and Ayden Carter, Joe and Matt (Alicia) VanNortwick; 2 great grandchildren; siblings: Mary Ann (Ron) Maynard, Buster Carter and Rose McMillian; and many nieces and nephews. Jerl is preceded in death by his wife, Janet; children: Wade Carter, Wave (survived by Mark) Manial; siblings: Jack, Robert, Herbert, Jr., John, David, Bill, Benny, Betty and infant Larry. To keep with Jerl's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial donations may be given to Thumb Animal Shelter.
