Jerome Joseph 'Jerry' 'Pop' Sawick, passed away on August 1, 2024 in his
Middletown, NJhome surrounded by the love of his family. He was 75 years old. Jerry bravely fought a long
battle with kidney disease among other health complications, but he never stopped fighting. His
strength and determination was awe-inspiring. He was truly a medical enigma and loved to tell
people about it.
Born to Nicholas and Kathleen Sawick on Staten Island, New York on
September 30, 1948, Jerry was a man of altruistic nature who found his greatest purpose to be
his deep commitment to God, his family, friends and country. He approached all aspects of life
with a sense of humor and had the ability to bring levity and laughter to any situation. He
graduated from New Dorp High School, Staten Island, NY in 1966. In 1968, he was drafted into
the US Army and served in Vietnam where he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for
his courage in active ground combat, one of his proudest accomplishments. After ending his
service in 1970, Jerry went on to build a successful career as an insurance agent for Allstate
Insurance Company and later became owner of the Sawick Agency on Hylan Boulevard in
Staten Island, New York.
Throughout his life, Jerry enjoyed a variety of recreational activities such as playing the drums,
awkward family photography, coaching his son's basketball and baseball teams, lending a hand
to anyone who needed a home repair (which was also an excuse to add to his prized tool
collection), debated who makes the best pizza, and provided solicited or unsolicited insurance
advice to name a few. In 1984, Jerry and his beloved and devoted wife, Marge moved from
Staten Island to raise their four children in their
Middletown, New Jersey home. This is where
Jerry cherished his time with his children and grandchildren with games, laughter, traditional
Friday pizza nights or a swim in the pool. Along with Marge, he built a welcoming home to many
friends and family and with Jerry around, there was always fun and laughter.
Jerry is predeceased by his loving parents, Nicholas V. Sawick and Kathleen Sawick and his
brother Nicholas 'Nicky' Sawick. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie 'Marge' Sawick, his
children, Mary Ellen (Michael) Davis, Kelly (Jason) Gavin, Christine Sawick and Jerome Joseph
'J.J.' Sawick, Jr.. He also leaves behind 3 adorable grandchildren, Isabella Davis, Brendan
Gavin and Bryce Gavin. Jerry is also survived by his sisters, Kathleen Sawick, Maureen D'Elicio
and Marguerite (Richard) Defee in addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins that will
remember him fondly.
Visitation will be held at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home
Middletown, NJ on Wednesday, August 7
from 4-8 PM and funeral mass at St. Mary's Mother of God Church New Monmouth, NJ on
Thursday, August 8 at 10:00 AM followed by graveside services at Brigadier General William C.
