Jerry Lyn (Bom) Cook passed from this life on December 7, 2025, in her home in Scottsboro, Alabama, surrounded by the people who loved her most, including her devoted canine companions, Ike and Tina. She left this world peacefully, held in the warmth of family, just as she lived: full of spirit, complexity, laughter, and love.
Lyn was born June 8, 1943, in
Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the fourth child of Mary Jo Swope Bom and Bernice Russell (Josh) Bom. Her early years were spent in many places, but Commerce, Missouri became home. She graduated from Kelly High School, and it was not long before she married the love of her life, John David Cook, in 1962. Together they welcomed two children-Steven and Dana-and began a marriage full of adventure, resilience, and profound devotion.
The first chapter of their life was spent farming. As their family grew, David transitioned into a career in the towboat industry. Lyn embraced her favorite title-domestic goddess-and also worked as a graphic artist, administrative assistant, and waitress.
A curious traveler, Lyn inherited her wandering spirit from her mother. She never met a road she didn't want to follow, or a place she didn't want to see. One of her greatest joys was visiting all 50 states-a testament to her sense of exploration and her wide-open heart.
Lyn was equal parts complex and common, but she was never simple. She loved creativity, sparkly things, and new experiences, yet her favorite meal was classic meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Dinner might be a can of corn and lima beans. In a fancy New York City restaurant, she happily ordered only French fries. In Napa Valley-surrounded by high-end wines-she chose an ice-cold glass of milk with a straw. She delighted in being unapologetically herself.
Her personality sparkled-spirited, mischievous, and deeply engaging. She had a razor-sharp wit and gave playful, teasing remarks as her own brand of affection. If she poked fun at you, she liked you.
Lyn was an artist, a dreamer, an explorer, and a fierce lover of her family. Her best days were spent gathered with relatives, laughing until tears streamed down faces, playing games, and enjoying one another fully. In every room she entered, she brought warmth, humor, intelligence, and a contagious zest for life.
Lyn is survived by her husband of 63 years, David; her son, Steve; her daughter, Dana (Doug); her sisters, Pat Griewing and Jennifer Anderson ; and her brothers, Jim Adams and Dan Wise. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Jo and Josh, and her sisters Mary, Kay, and Claudia.
Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life near her birthday next year-just the way Lyn would have loved it: full of laughter, hot fudge sundaes, memories, stories, and love.
May her spirit continue to roam the wide-open roads she adored, forever surrounded by beauty, wonder, and the echoes of laughter.
