Jerry D. Gaines, of Clarkston, Michigan, formerly of Hoxeyville, Michigan, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, at home, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on June 18, 1943, in Pontiac, Michigan, Jerry lived a full life rooted in simplicity, honesty, and deep affection for the great outdoors.
Known to many as a straight shooter with a heart of gold, Jerry was the kind of man who left an impression wherever he went. A proud outdoorsman, his "happy place" was always in the woods. Whether hunting deer or bear, Jerry was at peace as long as he was surrounded by trees. A self-declared carnivore, he never turned down a steak-especially if it came from his cherished charcoal grill. In true Jerry fashion, he firmly believed gas grills were for "sissies" (sorry, Marc), and he never backed down from a friendly debate about it.
Jerry also had a flair for the dramatic and legendary sense of humor. One of his proudest inventions was his custom-made "Panty Dropper" cologne-a powerful combination of two Dolce & Gabbana scents-which he claimed could turn heads from across the room and made the ladies go crazy.
Jerry spent over 20 years working as a draftsman for Oakland County, where fate brought him together with the love of his life, Barbara. They married in October of 1967 and shared a beautiful life full of laughter, family, and devotion. When Barbara fell ill, Jerry retired early to care for her, designing and building a home up north where they could enjoy peace and family gatherings in the serenity of the woods, they both loved. He remained her steadfast caregiver until her passing. To the fill the void, Jerry spent time perfecting his pool game and enjoyed his travels to league games and tournaments.
In his later years, as his health declined, Jerry moved closer to family. But not before one last epic "pre-moving" party-complete with explosions and laughter-that his loved ones still talk about as one of their favorite memories. Family was everything to Jerry. He adored his daughter Laura and son-in-law Marc, and cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was especially excited to meet his soon-to-arrive great-grandson, lovingly nicknamed "Lil Man."
Jerry is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Jane; his mother, Luella Gaines; and infant sister, Patricia. He is survived by his devoted daughter Laura Morgan and son-in-law Marc Thompson; beloved grandchildren Elizabeth Skwarczewski and Charles (Codee) Barnette, Jr.; adored great-grandchildren Alexander, Wade, and unborn Lil Man; his dear sisters-in-law Dian (Mike) Cullens and Karen (Larry) Jones; and his cherished best friend, Janet Smythe.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Coats Funeral Home, 3141 Sashabaw Rd., Waterford, MI. A funeral service will follow on Friday, April 25 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Martin Woody will officiate.
Jerry's legacy of love, laughter, and living life on his own terms will be forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
