Jerry Harris Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Amos Carvelli Funeral Home on Feb. 4, 2026.
Jerry Leroy Harris, 84, of Clarksburg, WV, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born in Owings, WV, on October 7, 1941, the son of the late Richard and Jessie Morgan Harris.

Jerry was united in marriage on November 5, 1977, to Nora Dean Harris, who resides at their home in Clarksburg.

Also surviving are his children, Brenda Ellis of Clarksburg, Rusty Carder and wife Whitney of FL, Geneva "Ginny" Walker and husband Matt of Bridgeport, grandchildren, Nicci Elliott and husband Jarrod of Wheeling, Morgan Underwood and husband Jerry of Shinnston, Victoria Cochran of Clarksburg, Juliana Cochran of Clarksburg, and Katy Carder of Clarksburg and 11 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Roy Wagner of VA, and sister-in-law, Gloria Kirkpatrick of Clarksburg, as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Harris, grandsons, Jerry Cox and Warren Elliott; siblings, Sarah Wagner, Frank Harris, Ronald Harris, Linda Brown, Sandra Blair, Bill Harris, and Earl Harris; nephew, Brian Kirkpatrick; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Denver and Geneva Dean; brothers-in-law, Chuck Kirkpatrick, Dennis Dean and Raymond Dean. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Harris was formerly a coal miner having worked at Martinka and Peabody Mines, a member of the American Legion Post 31 in Shinnston, and a District 31 member of the UMW Local 1949. He was also a member of the Congregational Missionary Church. He loved to fish, especially at Dog Run and Stonecoal Lake.

Pap can be defined as an informal affectionate nickname for a grandfather. But to us Pap means so much more. He is the grandfather who was always there to take care of all of us, the one who spoiled us with cake and ice cream and report card money. He is the grandfather with the arms long enough to hold a grandchild while watching tv. He is the grandfather with ornery jokes. He was a proud U.S. Army Veteran and coal miner. He was all these things and much more.

Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort, on Monday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Sherman Goodwin presiding. Interment will follow in the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the Harrison County Honor Guard.
