Jerry Ryan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Elliott Mortuary & Crematory - Hutchinson on Mar. 28, 2026.
Jerry J. Ryan, 81, of Burrton, died March 26, 2026, at Glen Carr House Memory Care. He was born March 7, 1945, in Hornick, Iowa, to John and Mary (Schimberg) Ryan.

On December 14, 1965, Jerry married Karen Collins, in Pueblo, Colorado. They shared 33 years of marriage prior to her death on March 15, 1999.

Jerry was a proud service member of the United States Army. He also spent many years as active-duty National Guard. Jerry was a true Patriot through and through.

Jerry loved being driven by a challenging workload. He worked at Hutchinson Correctional Facility for 10 years and spent some time at the Post Office. Jerry's favorite job was being a contract hauler. He hauled everything from beer, newspapers, motorcycles, and flooring. After retirement, Jerry worked as a dishwasher at the Barn in Burrton. He enjoyed working there so much and recently stopped in January of 2026.

Jerry was a very stubborn, independent, and tough person. He showed endurance by being an avid runner. Jerry ran 10 full marathons and 10 half marathons. He enjoyed playing softball and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jerry is survived by: children, Christine Schuley of Kansas City and Robert (Kim) Ryan of Burrton; siblings, Rosie Cain of Hubbard, NE, Alice Seehusen of Onawa, IA, Ann Hinrickson of Sergeant Bluff, IA, and Dennis Ryan of East Moline, IL; grandchildren, Mackenzie Brandt of NJ, Ryan Schuley of Kansas City, Zac Crow of Wichita, Dawson Ryan of Burrton, and Shelby Ryan of Burrton; great-grandchildren, Hannibal Brandt and Zaelyn Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; five siblings; son-in-law, Jon Schuley and beloved cocker spaniel, Chip.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2026, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel with Deacon Todd Ray officiating. Burial will follow in Burrton Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may sign his book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary until service time.
