Jerome W. "Jerry" Schild, 86, of Bartlett, passed away the morning of Monday, May 19, 2025, at his home.
Jerome William Clyde Edward Schild was born on June 23, 1938, in Smileyburg, Kansas, one of eleven children born to Roman and Pauline (Schulte) Schild. In October 1952, the family lost their home to a fire and moved south of Augusta on a city service lease. After purchasing a home from the city service, they moved it to east of Augusta. He later moved with his family to a farm east of Douglas. Throughout his childhood, he attended country schools and later moved to Chanute where he went to college to learn woodworking.
A hard worker all of his life, Jerry began driving trucks at 18. He drove a truck for Harry Byers and Sons for over 17 years. Over the years, he also worked in rock quarries. For many years, Jerry was employed by the city of Chanute shoveling snow, painting stripes on streets and making signs. Upon his retirement, he received a leather jacket with an eagle embroidered on the back, his pride and joy. Jerry spent his life working to support his family. His work ranged from truck driving to working heavy equipment in oil fields to hauling hay to working at a gas station and to using his woodworking talents in carpentry. Some of those years, he was raising children alone. He was onery but loving and his children were the center of his life. As his sons grew up, he enjoyed watching them play baseball and wrestle. Jerry was not much of a talker, but his responses were usually quite witty.
On February 8, 1958, Jerry and Charlotte Dannels were united in marriage. After 37 years of marriage and seven children, she preceded him in death. He later married Virginia Pilkington. She preceded him in death after 17 years of marriage. On March 18, 2018, Jerry and Marla Ann (Kirkland) Yarbrough were united in marriage. She survives of the home.
