Jerry Taylor, age 86, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2024 on his farm in Oneida, TN. Born in Scott County, TN on June 28, 1938 as the youngest son of Herbert and Virgie Taylor.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Jean Taylor Duncan and brother, Robert Duncan.
He is survived by his wife, Angela Ryan; daughter, Cathy Taylor (Robin); granddaughter, Alexis Ryan; grandson, Bryson Ryan. He was especially proud of his nephew, Robert M. Duncan (Joanne) and niece, Linda Duncan. He is also survived by his great-nephew, Robert M. Duncan, Jr. (Valerie); great-great nieces, Taylor Ann Duncan and Olivia Rae Duncan. Additionally, he had a long-term friendship with Leroy Lane who he loved as a son.
Jerry loved his Church and Church family. For many years, he drove a church van picking up children on Sunday's, Wednesday evenings, and Vacation Bible School. He'd flash his smile, greet you, and pass you a piece of candy or bubble gum.
In his youth, he enjoyed digging for Indian artifacts with his mother and father. He was a long time business owner in the Oak Grove area of Oneida, owning the Gulf station, car wash and laundry mat. He enjoyed sports and spent several years as a TSSAA referee.
He loved his farm, nature, animals, and had a special place in his heart for granddaughter, Alexis Rayn, who he playfully referred to as "the baby." He was Kiwanis Club Farmer of the Year in 1996. He served on the board of directors for the Scott County Farm Bureau, Scott Co-Op, and Scott County Soil and Water Conservation Service. Jerry volunteered his time for 20+ years as Scott County representative for the Cumberland Mountain RC&D Envirothon, teaching 5th graders and high schoolers about the environment. At one point in his career, he was a strip mine inspector and later worked for the State of Tennessee in Ground Water Protection. He was a lifetime member of the Scott County Rescue Squad where he served as Captain for several years.
Jerry chose cremation and will be buried on the family farm. Those wanting to honor Jerry could send donations to: Winfield Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 85, Winfield, TN 37892.
