Jerry Luther Wilson, a longtime resident of
Spanish Fort, AL, passed away on May 24, 2024, at the age of 91.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Betty Jean Shiver Wilson; parents, Anderson Pike and Ina Bowden Wilson; sister, Elizabeth Bryant; and brother, Simuel Wilson. He is survived by his children, Karen (Robert) Kirksey, Brian (Sarrona) Wilson, Darrell (Susan) Wilson, and Arlene (Jack) Kearney. He was also blessed with five grandchildren, April Kearney (Wes) Crowell, Jeffery Tyler (Jessica) Wilson, Jessica Wilson (Jonathan) Gobin, Colleen Kirksey (Nelson Padgett), and Brittany Wilson (Wes) Coker; as well as nine great-grandchildren, Lila Hearn, Jake Crowell, Ceela Hearn, Jonathan Gobin, Jerry Gobin, Patrick Coker, Adam Coker, Scarlett Wilson, and Lucas Wilson. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Kenneth Shiver; and sisters-in-law, Beverly Shiver and Julia Wilson; as well as many other relatives and friends.
After moving to Mobile, AL to work for the PX at Brookley Field, in 1957 Jerry married the love of his life, Betty. They lived in Spanish Fort for most of their married life. He went to work for Barbour's B&W Coffee Company in 1959. After spending many years as a coffee salesman, he bought the company in 1985, changing the name to B&W Coffee Company. In 1998, Jerry sold the coffee company and retired.
He and Betty spent most of their retirement years traveling across the US in their RV. They visited Canada, Mexico and across the US, missing only three states. They traveled to Hawaii for their 50th wedding anniversary, and took multiple long RV trips to Alaska. Jerry and Betty also spent many years in
Pigeon Forge, TN and thoroughly enjoyed visits from family and friends who traveled there for vacations.
Jerry loved the Lord, moving his church membership to First Baptist Church of Spanish Fort in 1956. Dedicated to the church throughout his life, he served in many ways: as a deacon, Training Union director, Sunday School teacher, Royal Ambassador program leader, nursery worker, as well as many other youth activities.
Jerry's children would like to thank everyone involved in providing him with compassionate care at the end of his life. These include Joy Girby and Brittany Johnson with Alabama Hospice Care of Mobile; Calista Patterson, longtime housekeeper and family friend; and the First Baptist Church of Spanish Fort and the multitude of friends and neighbors who provided meals, prayers and loving support.
Funeral Services will be held at Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road in Daphne, on Thursday May 30, 2024 at 10AM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, Officiating will be Bro. Robert M. Baker, pastor of First Baptist Church of Spanish Fort. The livestream will begin at 9:55AM. Interment will follow at Wilson Cemetery in Spanish Fort.
