Jerry Parker Workman
Jerry Parker Workman age 84, passed away on Monday Feb 20, 2023 at the Terrace Nursing and Rehab facility in Berea. Jerry was a graduate of Berea College class of 1960, he was an elementary school teacher for seven years at Pine Mountain Settlement School and Ferguson Elementary school in Somerset KY. He worked with Kentucky Guild Train for one year, and he was employed by Save The Children Federation for 32 years and retired in 2000. Jerry was a member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, and the Southern Highlands Handicraft Guild. In the early 1960s Jerry began dying wools with natural plants and became a master dyer, demonstrating until 2021. While working for Save The Children he started the Appalachian Fireside Crafts and later opened Appalachian Fireside Gallery on Main Street in Berea.
After retirement Jerry learned to play dulcimer and started making pressed flower cards and raising Day Lilies. Jerry was a brilliant, hard-working man who enjoyed helping and teaching others. The lives he touched and made better are so many and impossible to count. He will be truly missed and remembered for generations of people he encountered.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 62 years Eleanor Lambert Workman, his sons: Mark Workman, and Andy (Chris) Workman, his grandchildren: Kaitlyn Haley, Alex, Joseph, and Marissa Workman, and a great-grandson Talon Haley, a very special niece, Linda Hardy, niece: Barbara Abshire, and nephew Herschel Workman. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Herchel and Della Goff Workman, and siblings Glenn Workman and Mable Richardson.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date, in lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Jerry to the Berea Food Bank 103 Parkway Ave. Berea KY 40403, or the First Christian Church 206 Chestnut St. Berea, KY 40403.
