Jesse Lewis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bunch-Roberts Funeral Home on Dec. 26, 2025.
Jesse Lewis, 63, passed away Friday, December 26, 2025 at his home in Guymon.

The son of Audrey and Bill Lewis, he was born January 30, 1962 in Guymon Memorial Hospital. As a youngster, Jesse and his brother Tim spent many years learning the love of this prairie land with the times they spent visiting their Grandma and PaPa on the Lewis farm, ¼ mile west of Hough.

All of Jesse's schooling was in Guymon where he graduated from Guymon High School with the Class of 1980. Jesse then attended Liberal's area Vocational Technical School graduating in 1981 with a diploma in Diesel Technology.

At 18, Jesse made a big decision to join the United States Navy hoping to become a submariner. This is perhaps the most difficult and demanding assignment in the Navy. His last Sub was to the USS Los Angeles, with a crew of 143 men – 3 men to a rack (bed). No exercising spot or reading nook. To read one had to sit on the floor or perhaps the stairs – wherever you could find a spot.

Oh, no cell phones at all! Not on a nuclear sub! Now when it came to eating, submariners had it made – steak, lobster, deserts. Whatever made them happy. And Jesse loved to eat, especially good old loaded hamburgers.

West Pac trips were 6 months below the sea. No day or night just a long, long ride! However Jesse loved visiting and reading/researching the different countries and cultures. He retained so much information to share. (Audrey commented Jesse would have made a winning contestant on the TV show Jeopardy. When they'd watch it together Jesse would be getting 90 percent correct and she, if luck, would get one correct!)

After eight years he left the Navy and made Vancouver, Washington his home where he collected cookbooks and tried his skills at cooking. He worked as a diesel mechanic for Fleet Pride Heavy Duty Experts and other companies. Due to failing health, he returned to Guymon in late April to be near family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Lewis on August 15, 1996.

Survivors include his mother, Audrey Lewis of Guymon; one brother, Tim Lewis and wife Ginger of the Hough community; along with numerous nieces and nephews including Olivia Lewis of Hooker and Eric Lewis and wife Trista of Fritch, Texas.

Celebration of Life services honoring Jesse will be held Saturday morning, January 10th at 10:00 a.m. at the Bunch – Roberts Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Carter officiating.

In memory of Jesse, go eat a big, loaded hamburger! Memorials in memory of Jesse can be made to a favorite charity and will be accepted at the Bunch – Roberts Funeral Home, PO Box 1112, Guymon, OK 73942.

Jesse was one of my earliest mentors and best friends aboard the fast attack submarine USS Los Angeles (SSN-688). Rest Your Oar, Brother. I have the watch.
