Jesse James “Jay” Roberts Jr., affectionately known as "Jay" or“Jaybird,” passed away in the early morning hours of May 6, 2025, in Ascension Parish at the age of 69. Though his health had declined in recent years, his passing was truly unexpected.
Jay was born on December 15, 1955, in Opelousas, Louisiana—the only hospital near his hometown of Eunice—to Jesse James “Red” Roberts Sr. and Shirley Sedonia Johnson Roberts. He was his mother’s miracle child, born after she had been told she could not conceive and was scheduled for a hysterectomy, only to discover she was pregnant after her doctor unexpectedly retired. That twist of fate brought Jay into the world, a blessing his family never forgot.
He deeply adored his older sister, Anne Shirley Roberts Derbes, and often spoke fondly of their bond. He was preceded in death by Anne, as well as his parents, Jesse and Shirley Roberts, whom he also loved tremendously and was very grateful for.
Jay’s early years were full of deep friendships and adventure. His best friend growing up, David Savoy, was like a brother, Jay could often be found at his house after school, always leaving his mom a note on the kitchen table. He remained close with childhood friends Kent Moody, Everett Rheams, Craig McCune, Billy Carruth, and often told stories of their many shared experiences. He also fondly remembered David Lafleur, a dear friend who passed away during high school.
Jay was a creative and active young man. He played saxophone in the school band, participated in Boy Scouts (and could still show you all the knots), joined the rodeo club, and briefly played football in high school. He had a lifelong passion for martial arts (especially Shotokan karate), and was an avid fan of Bruce Lee. He was also a talented artist and a gifted singer, known for his incredible voice, "once mistaken for the radio" was one of his crowning compliments.
Jay initially pursued nursing at LSU Eunice during the Vietnam War draft but ultimately discovered his calling in non-destructive testing (NDT), a field in which he built a long and successful career. His work ethic and skill earned him high praise from employers and colleagues alike.
Jay had a sharp wit and a wide-ranging sense of humor that could surprise and delight. He was deeply empathetic, always making others feel heard and valued. Whether sharing a car ride full of music or engaging in a spirited conversation, he had a gift for connection. He was strong-willed and if he could learn about it and fine tune a craft he would do it with ease. Jay loved many bands, but none more than The Beatles—he could recite every lyric by heart and was known to give a full historical rundown of the band without missing a beat.
Jay was also a believing man, with his favorite Bible book being Romans. It was a source of strength and inspiration throughout his life, and he often found comfort in its teachings.
Jay is survived by his loving wife, Kim Melancon Roberts; His precious son, Jesse Connor Roberts; Daughters: Tabitha Goudeau, Jamie Roberts, Cameron Moon Alanis, and Keller Roberts Brignac. Grandchildren: Kaiden Reed, Lucia Hoy, Legend Roberts, Ben Roberts, Kai Roberts; Riley Goudeau, Landon Goudeau, Hunter Goudeau; Tate Alanis, Joe Alanis, Zach Alanis; Malachi James Brignac, and Benjamin Bishop Brignac. He was preceded in death by granddaughter Haleigh Goudeau.
He leaves behind many who will miss his voice, his stories, humor, and the light he brought to every room.
A private viewing for immediate family will be held on May 8, 2025.
