Mr. Jewel Spearman Jr. was born on December 26, 1942, to the late Jewel Spearman Sr. and Hattie Mae Hopewell Cavanaugh in Greenwood, Mississippi.

Jewel later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he worked as an assembler for Bryant Heating & Cooling for over 27 years before retiring. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized before relocating to Indianapolis.

Jewel enjoyed listening to music, playing cards with his daughter and fishing with his son. He loved sending snacks and money to his great-grandchildren and he could spend hours watching his favorite game shows and westerns, especially Gunsmoke. Let’s Make a Dealwas one of his favorites, and he never failed to choose door number three for the big prize when watching it with his daughter. Jewel also enjoyed reminiscing—sharing stories about what happened 20 years ago, like what store used to be on that corner and all the changes around the city.

Jewel departed this life on October 6, 2025 at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 10 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hattie and Jewel Sr.; his grandparents; siblings Johnnie, Abdur Rahim, Cornelia, Lee Henry and Mattie; and his grandson, Jewel Spearman IV.

He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Jewel (Gergina); daughter, Julianne; grandchildren Breon (Fred), ShaTie (Marvin), Sparko (Ovando), ShaLisa, JaQuita and Joshwin; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends like family whom he held near and dear to his heart.

Jewel will be remembered for his kind spirit, being a giver and deep love for his family. His stories and warmth will forever live in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:8
