Jim Cavender Obituary

Odessa - Jim Bob (J.B.) Cavender, 84, of Odessa, TX, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025. A celebration of his life will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at New Life Church, with Lynn Money officiating. J.B. was born in Eastland, TX, on July 18, 1940, to Willie and Leona Cavender. He graduated from Odessa High School and later earned his degree from Abilene Christian University. On July 29, 1962, he married the love of his life, Judy Keefer, in Odessa. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on family, community, and service to others. J.B. spent 35 years as a dedicated educator with Ector County ISD, shaping the minds and hearts of countless students. He was passionate about helping children, not only as a teacher but also as a leader in the community. His involvement extended to the Boy Scouts, where he mentored young scouts, and he was a member of the Elks Lodge. J.B. cherished his time coaching his children's baseball and softball teams and tutoring students through the People Pride after-school program. Known for his deep love of the arts, J.B. also enjoyed participating in local community theatre, where his creativity and enthusiasm shone brightly. Perhaps J.B.'s most cherished accomplishments were his grandchildren, who brought him endless joy, and the over 70 children he and Judy lovingly fostered over the years. To these children, he wasn't just a mentor, but a true "grandpa" who made a lasting impact on their lives. He also delighted in playing Santa Claus for countless children, sharing his warm spirit and kindness during the holiday season. J.B. leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and community spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who have had the privilege of knowing him.

J.B. is preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Leona Cavender; his first wife, Judy Cavender; his second wife, Carol Arnold-Cavender; his son, Scott Arnold; and daughters, Shelley Bruton Cavender and Maribell Sanchez Cavender. J.B. is survived by sons, Bill Cavender and wife Dianne Cavender of Odessa, James Cavender and wife Nancy Cavender of Fort Worth, Shawn Cavender and Angi Cavender of Odessa, David Arnold and wife Penny Arnold of Odessa, Eric Arnold and wife Amy Arnold of Spicewood; 24 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. Mr. Cavender was my 5th grade teacher at Cameron Elementary back in '84-'85. He was a fun teacher. I had the privilege of helping one of his foster kids (Shelly) when she would come to school once a week and play games with her while he taught class. I will remember him fondly. My condolences to all the family and friends. God Bless.
