Jim Fields

Paton, Iowa

Date of Death: August 1, 2025

Funeral Mass for Jim Fields, 85, of Paton, Iowa will be 10:00 am Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Grand Junction, Iowa. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Grand Junction, Iowa. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson.

James "Jim" Marshall Fields, age 85, of Paton, passed on August 1, 2025, surrounded by his beloved wife and family. Jim's family would like to extend their most heartfelt gratitude for the staff at Iowa Methodist Medical Center where Jim was provided care in his final days. We cannot say enough about the quality of care and kindness that Jim and his family received.

Jim was born on September 24, 1939, the son of James and Freda (Pirie) Fields, in Jefferson, IA. He was raised in Paton and graduated from Paton High School in 1957. He spent his time drag racing and working in construction and welding for a few years before starting Fields Bros mechanics with his brother, Don, in 1961.

On November 24, 1962, he was united in marriage to the love of his life and best friend, Judy "Jude" Nyght. Four children came of this marriage as well as a lifetime of love and happiness.

The Fields bros were quite the duo, and they added farming to their title in 1976. Jim continued to spend almost every day at the farm, tinkering and talking, until he passed away. He never met a soul with whom he couldn't relate to in some way, and he always had a story (or several) to tell.

Jim was an avid outdoorsman, spending as much time as he could hunting, fishing, and trapping. In the early years of their marriage, Jim's favorite pastimes included taking Jude turkey hunting and spending time at deer camp with his children. This year he was tickled to trap three coyotes at the farm.

Together with Judy, Jim loved attending bluegrass festivals and car shows. Every year, they enjoyed traveling to Missouri and Minnesota, where they would attend NHRA drag races with their good friends, Larry and Angie Jewett.

Jim was preceded in death by his daughters Kelley and Lisa Fields, parents James and Freda, in-laws Robert and Ruth Nyght and Howard Nyght, nephews David Fields, and Andy Miller.

Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, brother Don Fields, son James (Kimberly) Fields, daughter Ann Forkner, son in law Gary Forkner, grandchildren Whitney (Patrick) Minnehan, Travis (Meg) Forkner, Morgan Davis (Danny Licht), Dylan (Marisa) Forkner, and great grandchildren Peyton, Emmett, Khloe, Aria, Huxley, Charlie, Ivy, and Alaina, as well as countless family and friends.

Crack the headers open, Jim. Let 'em know you're there.
