MUNCIE - James R. Newsom, Jr.
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of James Russell Newsom, Jr, 86, lovingly called Jim or Jimmy, on June 24, 2024. He peacefully departed this world and entered God's Kingdom at Morrison Woods Health Campus surrounded by family and friends.
Jim was born on February 14, 1938, the son of Russell and Besse Newsom. He grew up in Indianapolis and worked alongside his father at Maplehurst Farms at a young age. He so loved his ice cream. He went on to Purdue and Ball State where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Arts. Jim married Barbara O'Haver on April 16, 1961. They moved to Muncie in 1963. He owned and operated, Jim Newsom Builders, and enjoyed his retirement after closing his business. Jim was a long-time member of the Muncie Homebuilders Association.
Jim was a member/deacon of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church for many years. He enjoyed singing in the choir, participating in church committees and projects, as his love language was acts of service. He was an avid reader and loved singing gospel music. He sang hymns at Morrison Woods for other residents and staff. His presence brought joy to those around him even during his health decline. His legacy will be forever etched in our hearts.
In reflecting on his life, we remember him for his spirit-filled faith that was the foundation of his actions and words. He was known as an encourager to pastors and others, his ability to apply scripture to any situation and his witty sense of humor. He was a long-time member of a poker group where lifetime friendships developed.
Three children survive Jim: Charisse Hinds Cooper (husband Jeff), Yorktown; Karla Riggin (husband Jeff), Albany; James R. (Rusty) Newsom III (wife Faye), Hudson; grandchildren: Melissa Hinds, Amber Riggin and Eli Riggin (wife Savannah); great-grandchildren, Ethan Hinds; Kallista Twilley, Jalen Driskel and Eryn Smith; and one great-great grandchild, Ja'kaelynn Twilley. Also survived by brothers, Robert and Carl and sister, Vicki Ehret. Jim was proceeded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Barbara, in 2019.
A service to honor and celebrate Jim's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 2700 W. Moore Rd., Muncie.
