It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jimmie Ray McClain, who left us unexpectedly on November 27, 2025, at the age of 33 in
Chesapeake, VA, following a sudden illness.
Born on October 16, 1992, Jimmie grew up in the Indian River area of Chesapeake and attended Indian River High School. Jimmie was a cherished son, brother, uncle and a devoted friend to many. From a young age, he was drawn to the water, where he felt most at home.
As a true waterman, Jimmie spent his life working as a crabber, fisherman, and tugboat operator. He enjoyed his time working for Colonna's Shipyard, where his skills and dedication were greatly valued. His extraordinary talent with his hands, paired with a sharp eye for detail, made him an exceptional craftsman both on and off the water.
One of Jimmie's greatest joys was exploring life beyond the familiar, most notably his time fishing in Alaska, a spontaneous journey that perfectly reflected his adventurous and free spirit.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Kenneth & Charlotte Newcome of Virginia Beach, VA and his baby brother, Matthew McClain.
He is survived by his loving mother, Darlene Wilson McClain of Chesapeake,VA; his father, Howard Ray McClain (Pat McClain) of Suffolk, VA; his brother, Chris Chappell (Kim Chappell), and their four children, his nieces and nephew, Alyssa, Liam, Audrey and Keira of Virginia Beach, VA; and a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who loved him deeply.
Jimmie was loved by far more people than he ever realized. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all whose lives he touched. Those who knew him take comfort in imagining him now at peace on the water he loved most, with his loyal dog Frankie by his side.
A celebration of Jimmie's life will be held for all his family and friends on Saturday, December 13, 2025, beginning at 3:00 PM at Colonna Houseboat located at 3346 Seneca Avenue, Chesapeake VA 23325.
"I am because you are. We are because he was." A reflection of Ubuntu, and a reminder that Jimmie's life continues in every heart he touched.
