Jimmie Smith Obituary

Jimmie Smith, age 94, of Marietta, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2025, with her daughter Sandra by her side. She was preceded in death by husband John, daughter Carol, son Riley, parents Mattie and Jim Haywood, sisters Marie Todd, Mable Haywood, Joyce Sammons Knox, and brothers Jack and Allen Haywood.

Jimmie is survived by daughter Sandra (Jack), grandsons Andrew Powell (Sue), Alex Smith (Kathryn), granddaughter Erin Parker (Mike), great-grandsons John Powell and Baxter Parker, great-granddaughter Lyla Parker, great-great-grandsons Easton and Levi Powell, great-great-granddaughter Jolene Powell, son-in-law Chuck Shirley, daughter-in-law Joan Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born Jimmie Carol Haywood on June 1, 1931, she was raised in Mitchell, Georgia. She met John Thomas Smith and they married in 1949. Carol and Riley were born in Sandersville, GA, before the young family moved to Marietta, where Sandra was born.

Jimmie loved the Lord, her family, working in the yard, gospel, country, and almost any other music (especially Elvis), and numerous pets (especially Missy). She also enjoyed line dancing, going to Lake Allatoona and Panama City with family, and just spending time with John, to whom she was married 39 years before his death in 1988.

Jimmie could fry catfish, hushpuppies and onion rings better than anybody. No matter where she went, people would comment, "She's so sweet!" And regardless of how she felt, if you asked her how she was doing, her reply was always, "I'm hanging in there."

The family would like to thank the staff at Greenwood Place for the excellent care Jimmie received over the past six years. They would also like to thank Karen, who treats the residents and staff to her beautiful piano playing and singing several times every week. This community was truly like a second family to Jimmie.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 6:00 PM in Mayes Ward Dobbins Historic Marietta Chapel. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service. The graveside committal service will be held on Friday, August 29, at 1:00 PM at Mitchell Baptist Church Cemetery in Mitchell, GA. Jimmie's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her generosity, unwavering love for her family, positive attitude, tough spirit, and the joy she brought to every life she touched. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mitchell Baptist Church, c/o Jacky Haywood, 6469 Highway 102 West, Mitchell, GA 30820, or to GracePointe Marietta Baptist Church, 505 Atlanta St. SE, Marietta, GA 30060. Alternatively, floral tributes are gratefully welcomed.

"Remember me in quiet days, while raindrops whisper on your pane. But in your memories have no grief, let just the joy we knew remain. Remember me when evening stars look down on you with steadfast eyes. Remember if once you wake to catch a glimpse of red sunrise. And when your thoughts do turn to me, know that I would not have you cry. But live for me and laugh for me, when you are happy, so am I. Remember an old joke we shared; remember me when spring walks by. Think once of me when you are glad, and while you live, I shall not die." -Author Unknown
