Jimmy Glen Benson, born October 4, 1935, in Johnston County, North Carolina, passed away leaving behind a life well-lived, deeply loved, and richly remembered. The son of Lester and Leah Ogburn Benson, Jimmy carried with him a natural charm, quiet confidence, and a gift for making people feel seen-a trait that followed him from boyhood through his final days.

At Garner High School, Jimmy shined both on and off the field. An All-Star baseball player and voted Most Charming, he was known for his talent, his smile, and the ease with which he connected with others. Baseball once held the promise of his future, and though an injury changed that path, it never dimmed his love for the game or the pride he carried from those years.

He went on to attend East Carolina University, studying business and becoming a lifelong Pirate fan. Few might know that Jimmy also found his way to the stage, performing in ECU's drama program-an early glimpse of his storytelling spirit and love for entertaining others. Whether on a stage, at a dinner table, or in casual conversation, Jimmy had a way of captivating people with humor, insight, and heart.

More than anything, Jimmy's greatest joy was his family. His daughter Shannon was the pride of his life, and his granddaughters, Elizabeth and Emma, were his heart. He loved his girls fiercely and unapologetically. He spoke of them often-with admiration, tenderness, and unmistakable pride-and anyone who spent time with him knew how deeply they meant to him.

Jimmy was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, and he rarely missed watching the Masters or the Triple Crown. He was also a passionate reader, faithfully reading the newspaper front to back every day, always eager to discuss current events, sports, or whatever topic sparked conversation. He loved learning, sharing ideas, and connecting with people from all walks of life.
He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Benson James (Scott) of Knightdale; his granddaughters, Elizabeth James (Trey Lineberry) of Siler City and Emma James of Smithfield-each of whom carries forward his humor, warmth, and strength.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Leah Ogburn Benson, his sister Jeanne Scallon, and his brother Jackie Benson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 29, 2026, from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., followed immediately by a memorial service at 6:00PM.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Rex Heart and Vascular for their compassionate care and kindness.
Jimmy will be remembered for his charm, his storytelling, his love of sports and learning-but most of all, for the love he poured into his family. His presence filled rooms, his laughter lifted spirits, and his legacy lives on in the lives of those who loved him most.
