Jimmy "Laid-back" Hlavac, 74, of James Island passed away peacefully at home on September 18th. Jimmy was born in New York City to Joseph Hlavac and Rose Stampfl Hlavac on December 4, 1950.

He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph Hlavac and Rose Stampfl Hlavac, sister Laura Sweeney and brother-in-law Dennis Morrow.

Jimmy is survived by his wife and adventure partner Jo Ann, son Matthew Hlavac and grandchildren Ailynn, Collin and Addison Hlavac, sister Joanne Morrow, nephews Eric and Billy (Marlene) Morrow, niece Kelly Ozolins (Shawn) and great niece Autumn. Jimmy is also survived by the family God gave him Karen Laughlin, Joe and Floss O'Donnell.

Jimmy proudly served his country in the Navy during the Vietnam Era. Jimmy was a mechanic in the Charleston area for over 50 years. He loved good jokes, racing, good food, and freewheeling on road trips. Jimmy loved the Buffalo Bills, New York Yankees and Rangers. As a true New Yorker, he cursed them all many times.

He was known for his ability to MacGyver any problem, his driving prowess and he never had a DNF (did not finish). He always ran the race his way.

In the last few months of his life Jimmy changed dramatically for the good. He accepted Jesus and became a true Southern gentleman/Christian; kind, loving, polite and grateful.

His celebration of life will be on October 2 at 3:00 at Coastal Community Church 460 Arlington Dr, 29414. We ask people to dress casual. If you have Bills, Yankees, Rangers or Patriotic clothes please wear it. There will be a repast following the service to visit with the family.

To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
