Jimmy Windell Seals was born on July 7, 1945, in Winters, Texas, to Marvin and Louise Seals. He attended school in Winters, where he graduated. He later served in the National Guard and worked for several years with Lone Star Gas Company, where he was stationed for a time in Comanche, Texas, and became actively involved in the community.
In early 1973, Jimmy found his true calling when he joined the City of Abilene Police Department. He served the department with dedication for 32 years before his initial retirement. He began his career in the Patrol Division, where he served for approximately five years, before transferring to the Narcotics Division, where he spent the remaining 27 years of his career. During this time, he participated in numerous operations combating drug activity in Abilene and worked alongside federal and state agencies across Texas.
Jimmy became the K-9 handler for the department’s first narcotics-trained Labrador retriever, “Diablo.” A lifelong dog lover, he took great pride in this role. Throughout his career, he received numerous certificates and letters of appreciation from the Abilene Police Department, federal agencies, counties, businesses, and citizens in recognition of his service. He was often referred to as “a legend” by colleagues and community members alike.
Retirement was a difficult decision for Jimmy, as he deeply loved his work, the environment, and the people he served. Just a few months after retiring, he returned to the department as a part-time police retiree, where he continued to serve for an additional 20 years until his passing. In total, Jimmy dedicated 52 years of service to the City of Abilene Police Department.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Seals; his mother, Louise Seals; and his former wife, Kay Seals.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen Self Seals of Fort Worth; his daughter, Stacy Long of Austin; his sons, Michael Seals of Austin and Jeff Hogue and wife Tasha of Tuscola; his grandchildren, Zachary Long, Destynee Hogue, and Spencer Hogue; sisters, Darlene Pennington of Pierce Fl., Jeanie and her husband Gene Wheat of Winters; several nieces and nephews as well as his beloved pets, Paco and Lotie.
Pallbearers will be Rodney Smith, Les Bruce, Bobby Drake, Shane Burks, Dennis White, and Anthony Joeris. Honorary pallbearer will be Frank Cleveland.
Memorials may be given to Abilene Back the Badge Foundation and the Taylor Jones Humane Society.
