Jo Chew Obituary

It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, and friend, Jo Anne Chew. She died peacefully while enjoying breakfast with her friends. Jo had recently been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and although her time was shorter than we hoped, she faced her illness with grace, humor, and her signature sense of optimism. She often said she never feared death, finding comfort in the belief that she would one day reunite with her loving husband, Douglass, who preceded her in death.

A proud alumna of Southwest DeKalb High School (Class of 1963), Jo continued her studies at West Georgia College. She found her passion in baking and spent many years as a highly skilled cake decorator for Publix grocery stores. Her talents were celebrated widely, earning her multiple awards at cake competitions and connecting her to local and international celebrities throughout the years.

She loved traveling and had an extraordinary talent for making handcrafted cards for every occasion-each one a personal masterpiece. She brought comfort to everyone she knew and loved, offering warmth, wisdom, and encouragement. An active gym member, she credited exercise for enriching her not only physically but mentally.

A member of the Conyers First United Methodist Church since the 1970s, she served faithfully in the Maxwell class. Her love, kindness, and comforting presence will be deeply missed. Her community in Conyers and in Atlanta will miss her generous heart and joyful soul.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 29 at 12:30 as part of a luncheon at the Conyers First Methodist Church (921 North Main St NW, Conyers, GA 30012).

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to a food bank where she frequently donated food for several years: Rockdale Emergency Relief (RER Food bank) https://myrer.org/money/. In the Comment section, please note donation is for Jo Chew.

Although I never had the honor of meeting you, I feel I´ve come to know you through your daughter, my dear friend Ginger. The values, kindness and dedication she has brought to this world are some reflection of your lasting influence. Your impact on the world lives on through her, and that legacy is a beautiful tribute. This is what matters most! May you rest in peace.

I have happy childhood memories of the time our families spent together, and I am grateful for the kindness she showed to my father during his illness. My deepest condolences to my cousins.

Our family - Kim, our daughter Marietta, and I (Rey) - shared many memorable gatherings with Jo over the decades. She was a true embrace of spirit, vitality, and warmth. Most of all, we knew Jo through her wonderful daughters, Ginger, Amber, and Robin. If a parent's life can be measured by their children, then through them, Jo deeply enriched our family. Even as we miss her, we will always remember Miss Jo with great affection, love, and gratitude.

My wife and I met Jo at Silver Sneakers. My wife thought of her as a second mom. Our talks were always full of warmth. She loved easily and was easy to love. She will be missed dearly, though her advice and the warmth of her voice will live on in our hearts.

Jo was the first non-choir member I met when I came to Conyers First Methodist in 2014. Immediately, I knew that this was a God fearing woman who also loved people. She consistently showered me with gifts and tokens. I always knew she was praying for me. What meant more to me was talking with her. She always made everyone feel so special. I'll miss my 3 clementines that she would leave on the organ or piano bench each Sunday.

Noey and I had the honor to get to know Jo (or as we called her, Mom) well when we met for a trip to Providence Canyon. Her open heart, kindness and frequent hugs were so warm and loving. The last photo Ginger shared was one of them at Easter Brunch and she looked so very happy! She will be missed by so many, but she has now been reunited with her loving husband and will see all her loved ones again. God Bless you, our friend, Mom Jo. Sheri Barrera-Disler
