Joan Armbruster Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jelacic Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Mar. 30, 2026.
In Loving Memory of Joan Spencer Lawless Armbruster (1935-2026)

A life that brought light to every stage – and to every room she entered.

Joan Spencer Lawless Armbruster passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy defined by her deep Catholic faith, her love of family, and her extraordinary ability to bring light, laughter, and connection to those around her.

Born in 1935 in Chicago, Illinois, Joan was raised in the city before attending Mundelein College of Loyola University. She graduated in 1957, before beginning her career as an elementary school teacher. In the classroom, she was a natural – patient, engaging, and encouraging – shaping young lives with the same warmth and energy that would later define so much of her work beyond it.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Armbruster, with whom she shared 30 years of loving marriage and a large, blended family, and by her son, Patrick (Jessica), who passed away in September 2025. Even through profound loss, Joan remained steadfast – grounded in her faith, sustained by love, and guided by a quiet but unshakable trust in God's plan.

She is survived by her sons Timothy (Leilani) and Michael (Lisa), by her stepchildren Gregor (Ann Marie), Christopher (Sonia), and Heidi (George), and by her cherished grandchildren – Clare, Grace, Jordan, Dunning, MacKenzie, Kaelyn, Margot, Niels, Sander, Ben, John, Maria, and Peter – each of whom brought her immense pride and joy.

Joan's Catholic faith was not simply something she believed – it was something she lived. It shaped her values, guided her decisions, and carried her through life's highest highs and lowest lows. Whether through her leadership at St. Eugene Parish, where she served as President of the Women's Club and on the Parish Council, or her continued devotion at Lumen Christi Parish, where she sang in the choir, Joan lived a life of service, compassion, and quiet generosity.

Her faith was present in the way she showed up for others – with kindness, patience, and love.

As she wrote in her book, The Road Through Life: "The road through life is not meant to be traveled alone, but with laughter, love, and those who walk beside us."

And Joan made sure no one walked alone.

She had a natural gift for entertaining – not for attention, but for connection. She loved to gather people, to create moments that felt joyful, meaningful, and alive. There was an energy about her, a warmth that drew people in and made them feel like they belonged.

Even her voicemail reflected that spirit – rather than a simple message, she would sing, "It's a lovely day today, and whatever you've got to do, I'd be so happy to be doing it with you, " a small but unforgettable glimpse into the joy she carried with her and shared so freely.

That spirit found its fullest expression in the theater.

For more than 40 years, Joan produced and directed over 50 theatrical productions, bringing stories to life and people together. From parish halls to community stages, she thrived in the creative process – the rehearsals, the laughter, the shared purpose, and she had a remarkable ability to make every participant feel like they were part of something special.

Her passion for performance extended beyond directing. Joan was an accomplished speaker and graduate of Dale Carnegie training, where she further developed her confidence, presence, and ability to connect with an audience – gifts that became hallmarks of her life both on and off the stage. She even had the opportunity to be part of a charity fundraiser show headlined by Bob Hope, a moment that reflected both her talent and her love for entertaining.

To Joan, the stage was more than a place to perform. It was a place to connect, to uplift, and to celebrate life.

She once reflected, " When we share our gifts – whether in words, music, or simple kindness – we create something far greater than ourselves."

Joan lived that truth every day.

Her productions often supported charitable causes, blending her love of the arts with her commitment to giving back. Through music, too, she shared her gifts – performing with the Junior League Chorus of Milwaukee and bringing joy to seniors and assisted living communities.

She understood that even the smallest acts – an afternoon performance, a shared laugh, a welcoming smile – could brighten someone's day.

And she never stopped choosing joy.

In her own words, " Life will always have its share of sorrow, but it is in choosing joy, again and again, that we find its true beauty. "

That was Joan. Steady in faith. Generous in spirit. Joyful in presence.

She didn't just enter a room, she transformed it. She made it warmer, lighter, and more alive. She brought people together, lifted them up, and reminded them of what truly matters.

Her legacy lives on in the family she loved so deeply, in the faith that guided her, and in the countless lives she touched with her kindness, creativity, and joy.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Rest peacefully, Joan.

You were a mother, a grandmother, a wife, a woman of faith, and a light in this world.

You showed us how to live with grace, how to love without limits, and how to find joy again and again.

And that light will never fade.
