It is with great sadness that the family of Joan E. Brecht (Bartholomew) announces her passing on June 28th, one day before her 82nd birthday. She passed away peacefully with family by her side. Joan was born in Ithaca, NY in 1943, and remained in the Ithaca area her entire life. Joan was a loving mother to three children, John (Patricia) Brecht, Joseph Brecht and Nicole (Peter) Castro.
She was a proud grandmother/nana to her grandchildren John, Megan, and Katelyn Brecht, and Madison and William Castro. She greatly enjoyed spending time with them, playing board games, watching their sporting events and dance recitals, celebrating birthdays and holidays and seeing them grow over the last 27 years.
Joan could light up any room with her infectious laugh and kindness and had many close friends with whom she enjoyed spending time. She loved a good coffee shop, neighborhood parties and meeting new people. To know Joan was to love her with all of your heart.
She is survived by her brothers Donald and Roger Bartholomew. She is also survived by her lifelong friend Carol Ciaschi, whom she thought of as a sister.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, sister and brother. Friends may call on Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 1 to 3pm at the Bangs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers please consider donating in Joan’s Memory to the American Cancer Society.

I took care of Joan through nursing services at home. She was a wonderful lady. She was always trying to feed me, hydrate me, she would say you have a lot of people to take care of today, so I'll take care of you! My prayers go to her family and friends... She was such a strong woman and such a strong personal advocate. She will be missed for sure! Rest in peace Joanie!

Dear family of Joan, I met your mother in the hospital when my son- in- law was in a room across from hers. Every day I would pass her. Her infectious smile pulled me in as I asked her if I could come in and meet her. We struck up a friendship from then on. Only 6 months of knowing her allowed me to see her love for God foremost, her love for her family and her friends. It seemed she made friends with all who were in her presence. I will miss seeing her at the hospital and the nursing home. She was a dear woman.
