Joan Curran, 91, of Heritage Pointe Rehab & Healthcare Center, Doylestown, PA, passed away January 17, 2025 with her loving husband, Raymond Curran, at her side.
Joan was born in Philadelphia on March 3, 1933 to Beatrice and Bertram Clemens. She grew up in the Philadelphia suburb, Fox Chase. This is where she met Ray, who lived down the street from her. Joan and Ray were married May 16, 1951 and would have celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary this year. Having grown up during the Great Depression, both did not care much for banks and largely avoided having debt, including a mortgage. During the early years of their marriage, they spent their evenings and weekends building houses. Ray was the carpenter and Joan the painter, sweeper, organizer. They lived in each house while they were building the next, and gradually amassed a small fortune for the time of about $9000. In 1965 they used these funds to buy land in Furlong and built their final home which they lived in for 58 years. Together they raised three sons.
When the youngest son turned 12, Joan went back to school, obtained her GED, and then became a registered nurse, something she took great pride in. She worked for Dr. Faunce, a Doylestown OBGYN, for several years. She later worked as a Bucks County Public Health Nurse and spent the final years of her career working at Bucks County Corrections.
Joan loved to collect antiques, read, quilt, make creations on her loom, and was an amazing cook. She loved to visit Maine during the summer and also traveled to Italy, Ireland, and France.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Curran, sons and their spouses Ed Curran & Julie of Tucson, AZ, James, of the Philippines, and David Curran & Bridget Marick of Vancouver, WA, daughter-in-law Debbie Curran-Nyce, Fairfax Station, VA, four grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Beatrice and Bertram Clemens, and sisters Harriet, Sissy, and Anna.
In lieu of any flowers, Joan always supported the ASPCA and Native American Tribes.
