Joan Daugherty, known by her friends and family as Jody, from Grand Marais, MN, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on February 1, 2025 at the age of 85.
Jody was born an only child to Dwight and Roberta (Pittenger) Keller on April 23, 1939 in Mansfield, OH. She met Jim and they married on October 12, 1957. Jim was her soul mate of 66 years, until he passed in March of last year. Anyone who knew them could tell right away that they were quite the team.
Jody and Jim began their life together in Mansfield (Ontario), Ohio where they raised two children, Jeffrey Allen and Jill Ann. In 1980 the couple decided to purchase Pike Lake Resort near Grand Marais, MN, a place they had visited annually for many years. It was a perfect fit as Jim could fix anything and Jody managed many aspects of the business.
Family and friends all agree that Jody was an excellent cook and there was always a baked item at the ready to satisfy their sweet tooth. And she could sew anything! Her grandmother taught her to sew at the age of 10 and once she started, she never stopped. She was a mainstay at Bethlehem Lutheran’s quilter’s meetings and loved making quilts for the newborns of the congregation. In addition to her involvement with the quilters at church, she was also active as a member of the women’s circle, sat on several committees over the years and put her cooking skills to work for Soup Suppers during the season of Lent. Jody was also a voracious reader, a love she came by from her mother who always had stacks of books at the ready when Jody was a little girl. Jody and Jim haled from Ohio where it was a birthright to become a loyal Buckeyes fan. On January 20, 2025, Jody was able to watch the Buckeyes win their first national title since 2014—a great day indeed! You can be sure she shared that news with Jim when she met him at the pearly gates.
Jody is survived by a son, Jeffrey (Pam) Daugherty from Elk River, MN; a daughter, Jill Pederson, from Grand Marais, MN; four grandchildren, Laura (Eric) Reller from Rosemount, MN; Aaron (Kristie) Daugherty and one great grandson (Bo) from St. Michael, MN; Jennifer Pederson (Fiancé Dan) from Hackensack, MN; Casey Pederson from Grand Marais, MN; his sister, Jean Beckdahl, who resides in Springfield, OH; a niece Lynn (Doug) Mitterholzer from Springboro, OH ; a nephew Mark (Cindy) Beckdahl from Springfield, OH as well as five great nieces and nephews and friends too numerous to mention.
A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais, MN on June 7, 2025. Jody’s wishes are to be cremated with her ashes to be placed along with Jim’s at Pike Lake, where they lived and worked for the past 40+ years.
