Joan H. Frederick (nee Hasson)

Joan Frederick, 93, passed away peacefully at home on January 30,2026, surrounded by her loving children. A woman of unwavering faith, boundless love, and quiet strength, she passes down enduring values Through four generations of family who will carry forward the warmth and wisdom she shared so generously.

Born to Helen (née Driscoll) and James Hasson, Joan grew up in West Brighton alongside her brothers Jim and Jack, both of whom preceded her in death. She attended Sacred Heart School and Saint Peter's High School before training at Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals Nursing School in Manhattan, where her natural compassion found its calling in nursing.

It was at Bellevue Hospital that Joan met William C. Frederick, MD, a surgical resident who would later recall falling in love with her "the moment he saw her beautiful eyes." They married on June 10, 1956, at Sacred Heart Church, beginning a 57-year partnership marked by deep love and mutual devotion until Bill's death in 2013.

Before raising their family, Joan worked with the Visiting Nurse Service on Staten Island, caring for immigrant families in South Beach. She often laughingly recalled how her Italian patients insisted she learn to cook before they'd allow examinations. Joan carried these recipes and the warmth of those relationships through life, filling her kitchen with the aromas of homemade meals and the sounds of family gathered around her table.

Joan and Bill raised six children: Gail (Tim Donovan), Donna (Tom Kendris), Lynda (Chris Meehan), William C. Frederick (partner Francia Louissaint), Megan Frederick, and Douglas (Melissa Frederick). Her family grew to include 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and she delighted in spending time with them and hearing about their lives and adventures.

She is survived by her children and their families, including grandchildren Kathryn Holden (William) and their son William; Timothy Donovan (Cali) and their children Lillian, Declan, and Logan; Amanda Kendris; Laura Tully (John) and their children Leila, Emmett, and Kiera; Thomas Kendris (fiancé Julia Gorski); Christopher Meehan (Jennifer) and their children Carter and Mylyn; Emily and Molly Meehan; Erin Frederick; Matthew and Andrew Salzano; and Vivienne and Colin Frederick. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Mary Lou Hasson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan volunteered at St. Vincent's Medical Center, where Bill practiced, and enjoyed golf and bridge with lifelong friends-women who shared decades of laughter and loyalty. Above all, she lived the values she instilled in her children: faith that sustained through life's challenges, the dignity of hard work, grace under pressure, and compassion for those in need. She had a way of noticing who needed a helping hand, a ride home, or a meal delivered to their doorstep.

Joan never missed a birthday or milestone, and her family will remember her steady presence, determination, encouragement, and tenacity. Though our hearts are heavy with loss and miss her already, they are also full of gratitude for 93 years of her love, for the family she built and knowing her precious Bill, our Dad and Pop-Pop, is welcoming her to heaven with open arms. Joan's family will receive visitors at Hanley Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 from 3 – 7 pm.

A Roman Catholic Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann's Church, Dongan Hills on Wednesday, February 4th, 2026, at 11 AM

Private burial will follow
