Joan Marlene Freed, age 77, passed away on January 16, 2026, in Temple, Texas, after an extended illness. By her side was her loving family as she went to be with the Lord.
Treasured third daughter of Clarence and Edna (Hoffman) Freed, Joan is survived by sisters Jenette Sanders and Judy Hunt, and was preceded in death by her long-time beloved companion Alfonzo Verduzco, of Laredo, Texas. Joan is survived by his children, as well as grandchildren, nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
Joan, originally from Danvers, Illinois, lived for more than 50 years in Laredo, Texas, where she managed a longtime favorite neighborhood bar, "The Broken Spoke". She also worked as a bookkeeper for TCR The Best Alarm Company, and commissary manager for CoreCivic Webb County Detention Center.
Most recently Joan lived in The Veranda at Twin Creek of Killeen Texas.
In Laredo, Joan was a member of Living Word Fellowship Church. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service and luncheon in her honor at the church on February 28, at 11:00 a.m. presided over by Pastors Richard and Dana Womble.
